Trailer Electrics & Reversing Sensors |
|
Hi all.
Got round to fitting a pair of WIPAC Smart Load devices so my indicator tell tale etc. all work with my all LED trailer.
As a precation, I fitted in-fuses on the power (from the indicator) wires, and earthed to the chassis point behind the rear N/S light.
However, with the fuses in place the reversing sensors don't work, but do with the fuses out.
The trailer indicator tell-tale only works with the trailer connected, which is correct.
Any pointers as to what I need to do to have the sensors working without pulling the fuses when no trailer attached?
Thanks

At a guess, you have the CCF set to turn off rear sensors when a trailer is connected. I think what may be happening is that the load you have fitted is tricking the BCM into thinking you have a trailer fitted and silencing the rear sensors. Changing that CCF will probably fix your issue but then your problem would be having the sensors going off when you select reverse with a trailer. 012MY RRS 5.0 Supercharged Autobiography (Current)

Try taking it off the earth and connecting to the neg wire from the indicator

The earth point I have used is in fact the earth point for all the trailer electrics, so changing that is not an option.
It would appear the Load devices I have fitted are too efficient! I could always fit them direct to my trailer, but don't want to break into the wiring whilst it's all under warranty.
I might just build a simple connector the fit between my socket and the trailer plug, but there again as it's not a big problem to put 2 fuses in place behind the car rear light panel, it'll more than likely stay as it is.

Do your rear fog lights also not work when the fuses are in? Also what happens if you change Terrain Response mode to ‘Sand’ with the fuses in and engine running? Does the vehicle height change or do you get a message on the dash saying height change not possible (Or words to that effect). MY14 TDV6

Rear fogs don't work, and no message on dash when 'sand' selected, however it didn't change height either.

In that case you will have to join the two negative wires from the WIPAC units together, connect them to one side of a switch, then from the other side of the switch connect that to an earth/ground point. Or just remove and refit the fuses to act as the switch.
Switch the switch on when towing a trailer with LED lights and off when not towing or when towing a trailer with ‘normal’ lights. MY14 TDV6

Thanks Kelvo, a switch is the obvious way to go, thanks.

Installed switch, connected up to the trailer with the switch 'off', so my reversing sensors were working, once trailer plugged in, switched switch to'on', all working perfectly as trailer 'sensed' by car.
Thought I might have to turn engine off and back on to get car to see if a trailer was fitted, but didn't have to.
Sorted, thanks to all and particulary Kelvo for the obvious suggestion which never crossed my mind.
