Transfer case and differential oils
Update 1: updated the post with additional info as per comments below.
Hi all,
I've been looking at replacing the oils in my D4 and could not find one post with all required info in one place. Some oils can be found only via dealers and some were renamed over time. Here is what I have found so far:
Front Diff
Oil: Castrol Syntrax Long Life 75W/90 GL5
Capacity: 0.61L
Plugs torque:
Drain: 54Nm
Fill: 34Nm
Rear Diff (Open diff only!)
Oil: Castrol Syntrax Long Life 75W/90 GL5
Capacity: 1.1L
Plugs torque:
Drain-hex: 54Nm
Drain-square: 28Nm (this plug may be found in older diffs).
Fill: 34Nm
Additional info:
- Always open the "Fill" plug first - if it is seized and the "drain" was opened - it will not be possible to drive the car without the oil in diff/TF.
A few questions:
1. Can someone please confirm whether the information above is correct? Especially about the TF oil "Ravenol" - there is a post on the forum metioning it.
2. Are there any washers required to be replaced? Someone mentioned copper washers, but I couldn't find their specs.
Response: usually the copper washers should be ok and rarely need changing.
Thanks for reading!

Yes Castrol Syntrax 75/90 for the diffs so long as you don't have a locking rear diff. Other brands are:
