Hi Ryall - did you buy the steel sump and filter from Ford? I'm guessing that the advantages with using the steel sump is:
- cheaper later service costs (as you only have to replace the filter and not the integrated filter/plastic sump)
- stronger sump than plastic - so less likely to be damaged off road
- possibly better heat transfer?

I was wondering if there are any drawbacks? Like for instance - it is a different shape and not suited to offroad! Shocked

Did you use the "ZF LifeGuardFluid 6" from ZF, or Shell M-1375.4, or one of the following (from the ZF site recommended for 6HP26):

ZF Lifeguardfluid6 (ZF No. S671 090 255)
=> AML Oil No. 4G4319A509/AA/S
=> Audi /VW Oil No. G 055005 A1 / A2 / A6
=> Bentley Oil No. PY112995PA
=> BMW Oil No. 8322 0142516
=> Hyundai Oil No. 040000C90SG
=> Jaguar Oil No. Jaguar Fluid 8432
=> Land Rover Oil No. TYK500050
=> Maserati Oil No. 231603

Thanks,
Rob

You must use the ZF oil.
Anything else will stuff the tranny.

What do you mean by this Norto?

As far as I can tell you can use any transmission oil as long as it meets M1375.4.

Or did I misinterpret you? Question

I was assured by one of our major suppliers that
their oil was OK but it stuffed the tranny.
The technician who fixed it said that he had to replace
a ZF tranny that he had used another brand of oil in thinking it would be OK

Norto's info is the same as mine, ZF fluid is the only one that is guaranteed to work even if it has such a scary price.

Yes the steel pan is suitable for off road use. No it is not a Ford product but is only available through retail outlets that service the auto industry as far as I can tell, I understand that it's made buy "A & B Automotive Remanufacturing" in Dandenong Victoria, Australia.

The original LR auto transmission pan is the large rectangular flat black plastic "fluid pan" on the bottom of the gearbox its only 1.5 to 2 inches thick, is heavily fluted on the exterior bottom and is secured to the gearbox by twenty-one torx screws.

The filter is moulded into the bottom of the pan and is very thin. There are two magnets there also to trap any stray metal bits (none in mine and almost no grey sludge). At the back of the filter part there is a vertical pipe (all plastic) about an inch wide and four inches tall, it’s this bit that breaks away from the rest of the filter/pan body during removal. Hope that I've explained this properly.

The parts used and their cost were as follows; prices are in AU$ including GST on 12/12/2009.
Steel Pan ZF-6HP26 (replaces plastic pan and filter) $234.08.
Filter 6HP26 for steel pan A/M (I presume this is After Market from A&B Transmissions $32.32
Pan Gasket ZF-6HP26 (Steel Pan) $12.45
Bolts ZF-6HP26 (used with Steel Pan) 21 of totalling $72.77
ZF-6HP26 Genuine Transmission Fluid (5 litres) $371.40
Total Labour $187.00

Hope this helps,

Ryall
