Transmission Range Change Not Available

Hi all
Unfortunately I need to consult you and hoping you can guide me in the right direction.
So I own a 2005 lr3, tdv6 and thought I’d do a good thing and get my car valeted…. She looks stunning, with a big but. When I got the car back, I have the warning on the dash of Transmission Range Change Not Available !!
I’ve tried to do a quick research and a lot of pointers pointing at the ECU behind the battery box, which I’ve had out to check and all appears in order. Nice and dry with no noticeable corrosion on the pins. I’ve got a code on the OBD. P0653.
She also won’t move into Lo Range.
What’s more bizarre, is if the car is left overnight or like at work today, when I turn the ignition on, my dash is like a Christmas tree, lights everywhere - ignition on and off and they go, but when I view the OBD codes I can virtually clear all, apart from the Transfer Case Control Module, which won’t clear and the message comes back onto the dash.

Any other thoughts, battery, alternator, negative connections etc?? Are these all likely to be areas to check?

Thank you in advance
Steve

Likely they got water everywhere it shouldn't be including the center console area near the switches.

Ok, latest update

So I was coming home earlier, the lights on the dashboard have all lit up and the suspension lowered…….but now the codes won’t clear - and there was more codes than normal now. 😢

I’m thinking the ECU is capoot….

Any thoughts

Good morning. Yes it all appeared dry with no contamination on the connectors. I’ve cleaned the negative contact point on the body as that looked a little cruddy to no avail and also put a brand new battery on

Still the same. 😢😢

I know you mentioned that the connectors seemed dry... but you might try opening the bonnet and get a fan or something in there to help dry everything out really well. I had an issue like this last year, and it resolved itself.

Also, you can also try disconnecting the battery completely and leaving it for 20-30 minutes (be sure not to short + and -).

Frustrating I am sure!

Frustrating is an understatement, she was driving lovely before…..

I’ve already tried disconnecting the battery and doing the hard reset, no good

I’ve removed the ECU this afternoon and disconnected all of the plugs in the area, like you say, allow to dry if it’s needed. I’ll leave it like that for the week and put the fan on in the evenings for extra warmth….

Fingers crossed

Ok, quick update

I’ve taken the Ecu out and had a drier in the engine bay for a few hours over the past few days……. Ecu in the house, opened up, cleaned and put back in the car with the new battery

I’m sat in her now, started her up and still I have the same fault codes. 😢😢

Now I have noticed the centre 4x4 screen is very dull…… now with the heating on, lights on and both heated screens, the alternator reading out at the battery is as low as 12.9v. (Engine idling)
I’ve just noticed the near side side light is flickering too

Could my alternator be the issue ??

Hi

Hope u don’t mind me adding but as you’ve removed both ECM and TCM modules behind the battery have u also tried placing a jump lead from the neg battery post to a good earth, ie on the engine etc to see if the multimeter readings improve

Can find a good earth using ur multimeter , Was the new battery fully charged before fitting it , should read around 12.6 Vdc with the engine off , 14.5 Vdc engine running

Did u check what VDC u got with everything turned on at 2,500 revs , then again all turned off at the same revs and then idle to see what they were plse

Know there’s an earth cable that can fail that’s behind the front drivers side wheel arch liner

Hope that may also help and sorry for all the questions

Fingers crossed it’s a simple fix

Ps, ref water , is the cabin pollen filter wet and is there any in the front footwell sills plse , wiring looms sit underneath a plastic cover as u lift the carpet, apologises as I’m waffling , Laughing

Hi, thank you for the response

The battery is brand new and was showing 12.7v before I placed it back on the engine bay.

As for the rest I’ll check tomorrow as it’s too late for me to start the engine up now. 😢

Many thanks
Steve

Well, no new developments

Ground to a different point, no difference….
Carpets and filter all dry

The module is no longer coming up on the diagnostic screen so I’m guessing either no power to it, or it’s capoot

😢

Hi Steve

Ur so welcome and As always a team effort

As 10 x days have passed has the alternator output readings improved at all and are there still any fault codes plse

Another test to try is , setting ur multimeter to V ac then with the engine running put a test probe onto each battery post plse

Not wishing to try and teach u how to suck eggs but did u test the earth point u connected ur jump lead to beforehand to ensure that was a good earth point with a multimeter plse

Have put a link for the fuses as maybe a fuse has blown so best to check them first and foremost before proceeding with the other tests

https://fuse-box.info/land-rover/land-rove...and-relays

If that all checks out and still getting a low Vdc output would check that front drivers side earth lead connection , it’s tucked behind the plastic liner

Enclosed pics below of the ground battery post lead connection that’s tucked behind the engines fuse box

Behind the Front passenger side plastic liner, one of the earths go up to the ECM , I removed and cleaned those using a wire brush attached to a dremel then reinstalled with some copperslip

Earth cable circled that is located behind the front drivers side wheel arch liner

Hope this also helps u
