travel/camping advice NSW |
|
whilst I love my D3 and it has just proved itself again on a 2000km weekend, my wife, who likes to go camping with the girls now and again and wanted a 4x4 to get away that was perhaps less risky when on her own, has bought a second hand 100 series Cruiser. Thats another story. However, the vehicle is in Sydney so we are flying over (from Perth) Boxing Day to take delivery. The plan is then to explore the NSW north coast and perhaps head up into Queensland before driving back to Perth. Only problem is we have no real first hand experience of the area and would appreciate any suggestions for 'Must-Sees' on or close to the Mid/Northern NSW coast. Free/great camping spot notes also welcome.
Oh, and as we will have to stock on some camping essentials we wont be able to take on the plane, good camping stores not too far from the city (of Sydney) would also be greatly appreciated.
Not necessarily looking for demanding 4x4 adventures (given the lack of familiarity of the vehicle I want to be in mobile range and NRMA/RAC range most of the time!), more the attractive coastal town with good eating type destinations - what I imagine Byron Bay to have but perhaps a bit quieter??
Any help/suggestions appreciated greatly and a very Merry Chrissy to all.

Two Words....
Stockton Beach
Just north of Newcastle and an absolute blast. A "must do" for every 4WD owner.... Plus you can camp overnight as well.

Head for the Forster/Tuncurry and Camden Haven/Mt Macquarie areas, the best places on the coast, it will be busy but so will everything! Great Camoing store is All Camping Supplies at Thornleigh, on the north side not long before you hit the freeway.

ARB have a store at St Peters on the Princes Hwy if you need any 4wd gear abot 15mins from airport.
The coast will be busy but if you go up New England Hwy you could do Oxley Wild Rivers up near Armidale Take the road less traveled.
