Trip to Iceland
Hi guys, planning a dream trip to Iceland in August with my Dad and 2 brothers for my Dads 60th. Idea is to basically the wildcamp, off road and drink beer. My Dad wants to take his 90 and I'm looking at taking my Disco.
Actually getting there is becoming a real headache. Only sensible way seems to be to drive to Denmark and then catch the Ferry though the Faroes. Problem with this thought is that it's really expensive and will add a week to the trip. Getting the 4 of us together for two weeks just won't happen. Would it be possible to stick the cars in a crate and ship them over and fly out to meet them? It can't be more expensive than that ferry. I've got no idea where to start researching this as I really don't understand it so any help would be great.

Yeah that defiantly makes sense, but the old man really wants to take his 90 somewhere interesting. It only ever sees his farm and he's attached to it like an old dog!

Or one person go with the car & ferry (long drive to N Denmark) and the other 3 fly. For a 2 week trip in country the one person with the car needs another week to get to Iceland and then across to Rekjavik. If things are the same as when I did it many, many moons ago. Great trip, just PITA to get there. That's why my road trips are to N Scandinavia, much easier and cheaper to get there, if not quite as spectacular, especially for an ex-geologist.

Norway is defiantly another option, one I'll dig into it if Iceland just won't work. This is a rare chance of getting all the boys together and I doubt it will happen again so want to get it right. Iceland just looks stunning whereas Norway looks equally stunning but you have to stay on the roads.
Anyone know how to go about shipping a car? Will a 90 and a Disco fit in one container?

ISTR there was a ro-ro that used to go from Immingham but that was a while ago and don't know if it still does.

I put a good bit of thought into this end of last year for an overland trip next year but have struggled to muster sufficient interest due to the costs.
Unfortunately it seems that when the roro routes and oservices reduced, the remaining companies monopolised the lack of choice. Best container prices at the moment seem to be £1500 return including loading/unloading and insurance. Only 18 months ago £1200 was the norm..
Comparing ferry vs container and flight, it only works out about £250 more to container and fly based two people per truck.
As regards when your there, there was a couple of decent routes on Wikiloc and I used those coupled with some of the sightS highlighted by some of the overland tour companies and a couple of roads from the dangerous roads website makes a cracking 10 day loop.
The only thing that did become apparent when route planning; although there are a number of fords with milder bypasses, there are also a number without and can be a good 800 - 1000mm depending on season which means a true sealed snorkel is a must unless you plan really carefully and have detours in the bag etc.

Probably been and gone but...
Went for three weeks and had a ball in my Disco 300tdi several years ago.
Used the Smyril Line which we caught in the Faroe Islands. Travelled to Aberdeen to Shetland Isles then ferry to the Faroes.
Smyril Line also sorted out accommodation for us which was useful along with discount vouchers for meals at the various stay overs. Accommodation ranged from farms through to hotels.
Prices for 2017 indicate 759 Euros per person with a car travelling from Denmark (which would probably be easier and less hassle).
Ships are excellent, crews are great and the cabins were good. Thoroughly recommend taking your own vehicle.
Chickened out on taking the Disco on to the glacier but then I was only on standard suspension and BFG AT tyres. Hired an artic jeep for that bit of fun!!
Will do it all over again sometime. Series 2a V8 killed it
Series 3 ex coastguard
110 HiCap
110 rebuilt from pickup to 5 seated hardtop...got that one in a feature of LRO!!!
Disco 300tdi. White
Disco 300tdi. Iceland and back. What a trip and no frozen drumsticks!
P38. Loved that car. Still miss it.
MGZS 180 major smiles for miles. Gone.
D3...LED bulbs in and out. EGR blanked. Geoff flushed and serviced
MG TF - bought for SWMBO. She doesn't like it. Shame. To sell or not to sell.
Triumph Thunderbird 1600 - awesome

You need one of these for the glaciers. Driver was just raising the PSI from 3 I think he said after coming off the glacier. This company modified the Top Gear vehicles for their shoot years ago. Iceland is one of my favourite places. Would love to do what you're planning.

All the info you need is here (idea as posted earlier):
Explore Iceland in your own CAR
For travelers who like to go on holiday with their car.
Drive on board Norröna and enjoy the calm and the sea all the way to your first destination: The Faroe Islands. Here, a scene awaits that you will never see anywhere else: The islands appear suddenly in the sea. Tiny, picturesque villages nestle in the fierce and fascinating landscape, the sea lashes incessantly against the cliffs, and the views are stunningly beautiful.
Heading on further north you will see the wild island of Iceland: The sub arctic nature of Iceland, its rich birdlife and rugged volcanic beauty has for a long time been very attractive to landscape and wildlife explorers.
