Trip ideas....

Hi all, I'm looking for a road trip idea from any of you that have done it..... 3-7 days in duration, home or abroad, be nice to take advantage of the LR's capability & give my partners daughter a view of the world many other 8 yr old kids wouldn't normally get! Mind you, tramping through our local flooded ford was an event in itself for her! Very Happy

Morocco may be a bit far, albeit something I'd love to do!

Dakar, got on a support crew yeeeears ago but a bit too intense!

West Africa, Liberia, Nigeria..... Thanks, but no thanks, not going back there in a hurry....

Cheers, Al.[/list]

Alan

I have rallied in & travelled in & through the Pyrenees on many occasions in the last few decades.

There is something for everyone, excellent driving with fantastic views, on road or off-road. Interesting wildlife, buildings, traditions & excellent food.

Here's some reading:-

If you PM me with your email address I'll send you a guide book to the area.

I have e-mailed all those who asked me to do so with regard to the guide - let me know how you get on please.

For the benefit of everyone I thought I would post some random thoughts & links relating to the Pyrénées.

In my experience there are few high quality hotels in the Pyrénées, but very many excellent inns etc. the gateway to the Pyrénées is often said to be Saint Jean Pied de Port, where theere is an excellent hotel, which although expensive is good value for money:-

http://tinyurl.com/aobs5e7

The Torla area has a few decent, reasonably priced hotels:-

http://tinyurl.com/aqnj7b3

and similar hotels can be found in Boltana & Ainsa & the surrounding villages.

If in the Haro area, which I visit regularly because of the Rioja, the Hotel Los Agustinos is a great place to stay, and very reasonable:-

http://www.hotellosagustinos.com/en/

in Haro there are some excellent restaurants my favourites are Beethoven & Terete where the speciality is roast baby lamb cooked in a wood-fired oven, served with chips & a green salad.

This link is to the Hotel Blau Mar at Llafranc, on the coast NE of Barcelona,I haven’t stayed there but those who have speak highly of it:-

http://tinyurl.com/a9mpbac

If in the area you should visit the tallest waterfall in France, at 422 m in the Cirque de Gavarnie – the most dramatic landscape in the Pyrénées:-

http://tinyurl.com/arjmfsa

I have posted in my gallery a two page PDF list of some of the Cols & Passes in the Pyrénées which I have visited in recent years in either my Jaguar XK150 or the MG B GT V8 - so not dramatic for a Discovery. However these pass through “interesting” country where off-road opportunities are apparent.

Another link, if you like Rioja and would like to visit the Marqués de Riscal winery, or even stay at their hotel:-

http://www.marquesderiscal.com/indexeng.php

an alternative visit would be Bodegas Muga which is located in the historical Barrio de La Estación (railway station district) in Haro itself.

Trip Length of 3-7 days???

Depending if that includes travel time to main area as well.

Getting to and from the Pyrenees is 1-2 days each way dependent on route etc.

How about Yorkshire Moors and Dales? Some cracking lanes.

Or northern Scotland?

I think the Pyrenees are Thumbs Up but not really practical in less then 7 days as it is to much of a rush thing.
