I looked at the Halfords Pro jacks but they were more expensive than the costco one,

Very surprised about this - I've got a trolley jack from SGS and it's always seemed like a really good piece of kit; and from what I've heard/read, their aftersales service is also excellent. I too would be interested to know why they're refusing to honour the lifetime warranty on your axle stands.

I have axle stands and the 10t bottle jack from SGS. Both seem very good, although I always use 2 different types of axle stand if I'm going under the vehicle.
Pretty sure my 3t trolley jack is the Sealey one and has given great service.
I'd be worried by the smaller, cheaper 3t jack linked above as it has a much narrower 'track' than I'd be happy with, unless it's just under the wishbone.

I have the SGS trolly shown in the link and can’t fault it.

It’s heavy, durable and lifts the front and rear with ease 👍 Also comes with a rubber pad on the jacking point. I recommend.

This is max height I believe under the rear diff.

Hi SPT

Many thks and very grateful , must admit I didn’t think of the jack weight Whistle

so fed up with my current jack which is from machine mart and totally useless, even with it being rated at 3 ton is still hard work using it

also see that removing the pad u can use a cross beam attachment , plus like the way u can lower that jack by twisting the handle

Appreciate the pic as I need to replace all my brake hoses and think it will be easier to remove all 4 x wheels and put the disco up on axle stands

Have a pair of 6 x ton rachet type but seen these as I’ll need another pair of stands

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SGS-6-Ton-Heavy...3869378902

370mm min
560mm max

Thks again Thumbs Up

This has been the jack of choice with original forum members.
Still got mine and all works good after about 14years.
Solid as a rock and gives great confidence when lifting such a beast.
(a jack adapter is a great addition for slotting into the chassis)

Cheaper than many and it has the high-lift function you will likely need.

Thumbs Up

Personally I am not sure about the height extension and safety? This adds a foot of leverage to the mech. Is there a weight reduction if you use it like that?

Most important for me is that it is a professional type action, the handle is the release valve not a seperate valve like a bottle jack.
This is important when you are precission lowering a 3 ton vehicle.

Hi discoverycomfort

Interesting u mentioning ref the extension, on my old trolley jack it has a wind out bit and sometimes when I’ve jacked the disco up have noticed the trolley jack wheel lifting slightly

Noticed on the jack I’ve been looking at where it’s got wider wheels, including where the back wheels can swivel 360 degrees, on mine the back ones are in a fixed position

Think that will make a lot of difference enabling the trolly jack to move a lot easier as it’s raised inc being wider , plus 1 , ref the twist handle feature

Also thk god we don’t have to rely on the suicide scissor jacks Big Cry

Thks again of that great point u raise, excuse the pun Laughing

You're welcome, it is heavy, I'm sure the website will state how heavy it is.

And I have those exact stands too, chassis fits on them perfectly Thumbs Up

Brilliant and many thks as also handy to know ref the axle stands Thumbs Up

Ouch, weighs 90 Lbs, I’ll get a small sack barrow style carrier so I’ll be able to move it from the shed to the front drive , too many obstacles for the jack to run on its wheels

Thks again Thumbs Up

I’d be careful buying the SGS equipment, I bought a pair or 12 ton axle stands from them and 1 failed with the car in the air, the ratchet mechanism collapsed. I contacted them because the stands are supposedly covered with a lifetime warranty but they refuse to exchange the item and are not interested in the safety aspect either.
It’s now with trading standards.

Shocked

How essential is height? I've used an older Halfords 3t trolley jack and it lifted high enough to put the car on a set of stands but only just. I plan to buy something better but what's the ideal minimum?
