How to troubleshoot noisy bearing at front of engine? |
|
I've got what sounds like a noisy bearing on an ancillary component/idler at the front of my engine.
It's only noisy when the car is started from cold and goes away after about 60-90 seconds of running. The noise is there regardless of whether the AC turned on or off, and the noise changes with engine speed.
Can anyone suggest a way to identify where it is coming from? 2007 Land Rover LR3 4.0L V6

Pop belt off and have a spin of the pulleys.
I have no idea what engine you have? but if it is the 2.7 be aware the a/c never truly switches off even when switched off the pump is still working, have a serahc for variable displacement a/c pumps.
I hope for your sake it is not the a/c pump on a 2.7, as it is one ahole of a job!

Is it possibly your tensioner? They go on the TDV6 and make quite a noise.

I would start by replacing the aux belt and both tensioners, its most likely one of them making the noise and its easy to do. Andrew

Thanks for the suggestions. I should have mentioned, my car has the 4L V6 petrol engine (I'm in Australia).
Haven't had time to investigate further yet. I have however determined that it appears to be temperature sensitive. The noise is usually there first thing in the morning when the car is cold (it's Spring here and we've been having single figure overnight temps), however yesterday morning the car had not been driven but had been sitting in the sun for a couple of hours - it was probably the warmest morning we'd had for a couple of months. When I started it, no noise! 2007 Land Rover LR3 4.0L V6

could be timing chain and noise disappears after oil pressure is up. Check oil level and is it due for a change.

Use a listening stick, a long BBQ fork is good.
One end on the relevant bearing, the other in your ear (best be the pointy bit on the bearing!), if you've never done it before, you'll be amazed at what you can hear.
