So I am 2 years in with this problem, although I have not done many miles as it was the backup vehicle for my overland trip last year (in Africa you need it as parts are expensive and Landrover dealers limited over border from SA).

I sold the overland vehicle late last year so this is no my main transport. I have been in touch with ZA services South Africa over the last year, they had not come across this problem before. Earlier this week ZF have just opened an office in Durban so popped down to see them. Met the Lynton the Branch Manager and had a good chat. Their main focus is on this gearbox, ironically he said they have far more problems with the BMW's than the Landy's. He does not believe it is the TC but had this issue previously, after a lot of investigation they found it to be the catalytic converter rattling, not convinced by this.

So the the Disco continues to pull well, no judder and seamless gear changes, it is going in next week to have the investigation will let you know the outcome!
Owning a Discovery 3 is like dating a model.. a firm body and shape, wow.. the ride is fantastic >Very Happy for this your wallet can take a pounding and you worry about being deflated at any time...

I am pretty confident that the noise comes from the torque converter and that a new torque converter will not necessarily eliminate it but will change it. About 12 months ago I had the noise that could be 'switched on and off' by the throttle position but I also had the dreaded torque converter judder, I replaced the torque converter and the judder disappeared completely but the noise changed in both tone and volume but did not go away. I now choose to ignore it.

guys i have the same issue injectors changed, inter cooler pipe changed, turbo changed, oil/filter changed
im starting to think its the cross over pipe ????
when car idols it sounds fine but between 1500-2000 RPM i can hear a metallic clicking tapping with engine speed. Higher revs it gets a bit louder but also the engine gets louder too, it only happens when the engine is hot

Can I ask If this is not just diesel knock?
To pinpoint where it maybe coming from, try a piece of fuel pipe held to your ear, then hold the other end around the engine.
A long screwdriver held on your ear (handle end...), with the other pressed on various parts can also help diagnostics.

Thanks, have tried that with a piece of 1/4 dowel that’s why I changed the injectors due to the noise I could hear , they worked fine as I had a few checked but they were very noisy. The noise I’m trying to find now is as I’ve described so will be under the car checking other areas with my piece of dowel

I have this problem for two years. This sound came few moth after TC change.
The indiw transmittion technician told, the TC is perfect.
This noice is disturbing me. I don't know if it will damage the whole gearbox.
#MGCarr Do you still have this problem?

I’ve had for a while now and I’ve checked all pipes and clips, throttle body seals
I noticed it when it had a new turbo Fitted. The sound comes from what I believe is the air intake on the wing sounding like air rushing back out . Is it possible the the veri vaines are operating a bit early and the built up pressure is flowing back ? Just a random stab here. Hoping someone with a bit more turbo knowledge can help

Daz , I've check eveything too , i even took off my egr blanks and put gasket sealer on the metal gaskets incase that was causing it . You can hear it more in the wheel arches which makes no sense to me , as a broken crossover pipe wouldn't sound like this surely .
It's definitely Air related, i can't see it being anything to do with the torque converter or gearbox as valves with fluid in them cannot make this dump valve type noise . I guess I'm just going to start throwing money at the problem , starting with new egr valves removing the blanking shims and reconnecting the butterfly valve . Then i'll replace the intercooler hoses and the metal intercooler pipe.
I can't see it being the Turbo either as someone on here replaced the Turbo and still has this noise . But it sounds boost pressure related to me ...

I’ve had a new turbo and I’ve got this noise so I’m stumped 🤔
My other disco has the egrs blanked also and it doesn’t make the dump valve noise
. Is it worth unplugging the egrs even though they’re blanked and see if it changes anything ?

It's weird isn't it, my noise isn't there when cold , but gets progressivly louder as the engine warms up , i don't think mine made this noise before i blanked the egrs , so i'll stick a new pair on and let you know if there is any change .. thanks Daz

👍🏻 Be good to get this done and dusted as I’ve seen a lot of ppl with the exact same issue. Not causing faults but doesn’t sound right at all
