Turbo Actuator - No reading

Hi,

I have a P132B-00 fault appearing on my IID tool with the Engine System Fault.

The code can be cleared but then returns at start up indicating an actuator fault.

In live data I am getting no return on ‘Boost Pressure Actuator - Bank 1’

When moving the actuator arm manually, it was slightly gritty but not seized although there was an obvious ‘notch’ at the top of the range. Lubricated and worked forwards and backwards then refitted.

Does anyone know which fuse/wiring circuit the actuator is on, I don’t want to strip this and I am wondering if the have knocked or damaged something (recently had the inner fuse box out for a sunroof drain).

I suspect the actuator has failed which I’m guessing means the turbo has to come out - I hope not!

Can the arm move if the inner vanes are seized - in other words, can the arm snap internally or would the whole thing just not move? I could probably get some cleaner in there.

Some background: I have just changed the cat due to a rotten flexi. On inspection of the turbo, the turbine moved freely and had no play on the shaft. There are no EGRs, the boost circuit is solid (aftermarket intercooler and silicone pipes).

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. The attached screenshot shows no data for the MAP sensor but this is likely a logging glitch as it was showing normal range in the app.

I wouldn't worry too much about live data. I don't trust all of it.


Try these

1) At ignition on and off the actuator should move, so see if it does that (unless you have a year2004)
2) With the ignition on, use the coat hanger trick to move the actuator arm. It should fight you and pull it back.
3) Put some wynns diesel vvt/turbo etc cleaner in the fuel tank . Purple bottle maybe

These is no specific fuse. Shouldn't break internally. Just gets clogged up with soot.

Thanks Pete, I’ll give those a try and see. Maybe I pushed it out of range of the pot/motor.

Assuming that if the arm doesn’t fight me either the electrical connector or actuator has failed (worst case).

The code P132b refers to the actuator performance but not any electrical aspect of the solenoid operation. So as Pete suggests it's either the vanes in the turbo are carbonised or the arm needs freeing up, or both. (urban driving cycles will clog the vanes)

The solenoid itself or it's electrical connector plug very rarely give any trouble. If there was a fuse blown or electrical connectivity fault there would be a code to support that. As for the solenoid fuse it likely comes under the diesel EMS/ECU fuses in the BJB fuse box the CJB box

Once you've freed it off and added the fuel additive burn it up the motorway for 10 or 15 miles and back again which should burn off most of the carbon on the vanes. I use Dipthane added to every fill up in all my vehicles and particularly the turbo aspirated ones which keeps the turbo spotless!!Thumbs Up

Yes, if it doesn't fight you, something electrical or actuator at fault. Otherwise it a mechanical issue

Solved - Pete, PROFSR G huge thanks for all the advice.

So even though I had already done this the day before, it was stuck solid at the top of the range when I went in today. I think I’ve been driving it too nicely and need to give it a blast out now and again.

I’m going to give the Dipetane a try as suggested by PROFSR G.

Yeah the vanes will clogg up if constantly subjected to sedate or urban driving style.

The additive will raise combustion temp and help burn off any carbon. I buy 5lt jars and keep a litre in each vehicle of which a small amount is added to the tank on every fill up. It will also clean up exhaust for when test falls due! Wink
