Twin Axle caravan motor mover -advice please ! |
|
We are looking to buy the above.
Powrtouch seems to be the best - but the most expensive by far.
Magic mover is almost half the price and comes with a 5 year parts and labour guarantee.
My question is - do we need the AWD version?
I realise they make the caravan far more manouverable but our caravan is in storage and easy to get in and out without a motor mover.
My need would predominantly be on smaller pitches in the lakes where it can be tricky to reverse a large caravan- my hope is that a 2WD will suffice.
What do the experts think ? Original Owner.
Mods:
RRS modded grill- Narpy.
De tango'd lights- Beanie.
EGR's blanked -Flack
LED's allround.

I would go for the 4wd one. The twin axles take some turning.

I have a Reich on my TA and my sister has the Powrtouch on a SA. Both are good but on a TA you do need 4 motors and be aware the rear ones get full of crap from the road. DS3 TDV6 HSE - Silver with Alpaca (old one) Gone

Speak to Powertouch, explain the cost compared to others, they were happy to pricematch when I bought mine a while ago.
Mines on its second van now, soon be entering its eighth year and been faultless, saying that it does not get used much, just to get it back on the drive as it is a delicate manoeuvre.
Would go for Four Wheel Drive if you can, you can sort of get by with Two Wheel Drive having it on the rear axle and raising the front with the jockey wheel as much as you can, to limit the tyre scrub but it's not ideal.

I had a twin axle Crusader with a mover and that was a heavy van. there was only one motor per side but it was designed for twin axles. I understand the difference is that these pulse when turning so as not to strain the tyres. I think the more modern ones now have four motors but as you say more expensive.
Now have a powertouch on my coachman single axle and it works well but not used often. Currently 2015 D4 SE Tech, Corris Grey

As others, I can recommend Powrtouch. Reliable, good tech support.
IF money is tight and you don't have anything difficult (eg a slope) to handle then I'd say go for it (Ie get the single axle version).

Four motors or two, the turning circle has to be much the same otherwise the tyres and surface would rip each other to shreds. There can be a problem with two motors when one of the driven wheels looses traction on uneven ground but there is a lever that applies the brakes to deal with that. I have looked at this previously when toying with the idea of changing my single axle van for a twin axle.
Although Powertouch make a unit that will fit to just one axle it obviously does not have the power of the awd version. If you're just manoeuvring on the flat I think you would be ok but as I have quite a steep drive I decided I would need the awd version.
Somewhere in all the blurb I'm sure you will find the maximum gradients capable of both units.

With 4 wheel setup you do generally get a tighter turn (but still nowhere near how a single axle can be turned) and I dare say it will tackle slightly steeper inclines.
I've got a 2 wheel mover on a twin axle and am very happy with it. Also consider the significant extra weight that a 4 wheel mover will be over a 2 wheel mover that will have to be deducted from your payload capacity.

With hindsight I'd have just gone for single mover on our TA van
It's a power touch and have had lots of issues with it such that only one set was working at once, and never found a situation when AWD was needed, including our drive which is on a slope.
Should be said powertouch have been great for coming out and fixing it and hopefully now fixed!

Powrtouch for me as well, just on one axle (the front one as you need to relocate the spare wheel carrier if fitting a mover to the rear axle) - has worked fine.

The time I needed awd was on uneven ground such as crossing a dropped curb to get from my drive onto road. With single drive you can find the driven axle may not be the one in contact with the road so you lose your movement. Raising and lowering the jockey shell to shift how the wheels take the load. We managed without going to awd. 2005, TDV6 S, Auto, 190k miles, owned from new, V8 Brake Upgrade, Nancom Evo, RLD protector, BAS EGR blanking & Remap, separate ATF cooler, changing all the fluids ahead of time.

The two motor units designed for twin axle vans are not the same as those supplied for single axle vans. The electronics are also different. talking to my 'van service guy he said the powrtouch motor units were the same, its just the control unit thats different, as on a single axle 'van, when you turn it, one motor goes forward, the other goes backwards, which is why you can spin the 'van round on its axis, but on a TA when you turn it, both motors run in the same direction, just one runs faster than the other.
