Welcome.

Well nothing counts more than footprint in the sand, which I guess is where your narrower tyres would have let you down.


But to be embarrassed by a freelander is nothing to worry about. The lighter vehicles seem to have an easier time of it on the dunes. D3's carry more beer though Smile

Thank you for all the inputs, Cooper (or the importers thereof) is going to refund me for the defected tyres. Smile I opted for Goodyear Silent Armour 255/65/17 at just under R2k per tyre. The circumference is according to a formula on the internet only 0.3 % more than the stock 235/70/17. Apparently these tyres are Kevlar reinforced and comes with an 80k km guaranty in the states. The tyres do look good and are very quiet, let’s hope for the best.

Did you have damage both front and rear?
More weight at rear= more damage?

Andrew, Heine, 'tis also the pressure Big Cry that gets you ... My 18 inch AT2's got the knobbies ripped on severe rocky stretches, more at the rear due to heavy load and high tire pressures to keep sidewalls up. Front ripped but OK, still driving.

Big Cry (on sideslope the 18 Inch rims leave too little and very compressed rubber)

Hi AP, it appears as if more damaged were sustained to the front tyres, although only slightly more. I deflated the tyres to about 1.8 Barr, could this aggravate the situation?

Willem,

I do not know your front tires were more badly damaged. Maybe the lower pressure on rock was a bad idea... Did the tires deform a lot at 18 bar?

With the AT2's the front seems to have handled things better due to less weight and also the pressures at 23/24 bar max. The front are less deformed in general due to the weight aspect,

Some believe that one should reduce pressures on sharp rocks. Sure looks cool, but then the sidewalls are eaten, Crying or Very sad badly, on 18 inch bling rims ... pressures up, sidewalls kept save.
