Tyre Replacement Strategy

Hi All

I don't submit too many items here but tyres are my ultimate frustration with the D3 so I am looking for some clarification/advice regarding replacing OEM tyres with aftermarket ones. I am looking at moving from the dreaded Goodyears (235/70 r17) to Yokohama (255/65 r17), and as a result of some tyre shredding on a western qdl trip I have 2 relatively new goodyears on the front with 2 older worn goodyears on the back.

My plan was to install 2 new yokohama tyres on front and move best 2 Goodyears to rear. Then down track when Goodyears wear/puncture/shred/etc replace them with Yokohamas. Based on a couple of online tyre calculators and discussions with local tyre shop (LTS) there is only +2mm variation in overall tyres sizebetween these 2 sizes. This is well within QLD limits and should have minimal impact on speedo.

However additional advice from a LTS is that because the D3 has constant 4wd it is preferred to have same size tyres front and rear dso as not to put too much strain on diffs etc. (Same situation with other constant 4wd makes Subaru and some Audis etc - recommendation to replace all 4 at once).

I also noted on page 251 of the manual it state tyres should be replaced as sets of 4 and if that is not possible then replace as axle sets. (though it is not clear why)

I guess my question is - what risk am I really facing by adopting a replace 2 at a time tyre strategy. Is it likely to really impact vehicle given I am currently running 2 newish (front) and 2 worn (rear) tyres as they probably have a size difference just in wear and tear?

Your advice/thoughts please

Regardless, you should always have the wider tyres on the rear, always!

Hi Ian
just my 2 bobs worth - you have a quality car and to enjoy the best I would not skimp on tyres and whilst I have got > 40,000kms out of the original wranglers on 2 sets and I know some people hate them, I don't think that is poor mileage for a heavy car.
I keep a set of 17inch coopers STT for safari work to get the best on road and off road experience.

I would recommend Cooper Discoverers. They come with a 55k warranty and whilst being much harder wearing than the Goodyears, ride just as well. They're also far cheaper so you win all round.
