Tyre wear - not too impressed |
|
I've got Pirelli Scorpions on mine and have done 11k miles.
The tyres are wearing the same all round but if I look at the three grooves down the centre of the tyres, the outer two are down to 5mm but the inner groove is 3.5-4mm. Is this unreasonable?
I check my pressures every week and are running the 33 psi front, 36 psi rear as recommended for the 18" wheels on my SE.
FWIW additionally there are quite a lot of those small surface cracks on the tread and the car is not even a year old yet.
Any thoughts? Thanks

I checked mine over the weekend & found that the unused spare Pirelli started with only 8mm of tread.

Obviously, tyre wear is a little subjective as there are many factors to take into account. The predominant road surfaces you use, how you drive, what weights are carried etc.
Some D3's did have problems with excessive inner edge tyre wear and I seem to recall that this a known issue.
In your case, I wouldn't be too unhappy with 2-3mm lost after 11,000m. 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

I am a little concerned that the central tread is down to 3.5mm in many areas. I would change at 3mm so I've only going to get to, say, 15k miles. I'm also concerned that the tyres are wearing more in the middle. Are the recommended pressures therefore too low?
I apppreciate that its also down to roads and how they are driven. I'm in rural Scotland so its A's and B's which will make the tyres work harder than m'ways.

I have had similar problem which wass put down to the compressor fitted being not up to the job. the tyres wore on the ineer edges and were casselated (i.e. uneven wear around the center.
LR payed for a new set of wranglers. At this pont I had done over 25K and the outer edges still had about 6 mm where as inside and some centre patches were nearly illegal and causing excessive road noise.
In addition the problem had caused the wheels to be missaligned only a small amount but enough to have an effect so they had to do a full alignment. 2004 TDV6 HSE Auto Zambezi Silver

Extra wear in the centre would suggest over inflation, are you sure your pressure gauge is accurate? The End

I've got three gauges all within 0.5psi of each other but you never know.
Are the Pirellis' and the Wrangers' the only OEM tyre?

Do you know which Conti? (I've only ever seen Pirellis). When I replace the tyres I was hoping to buy only three and use the spare. I guess that would tie me to Pirelli though.

one question - how important (on a scale of 1-10) is it?
Me, I'd go for a 1.5 - 2.5
tyres wear, lots of things affect tyre wear, it's one of life's imponderables.....
