So thought I would open up the headunit before trying that. Is this white stuff normal?

Likely to me normal.

So I opened up the head unit more so I could take out the main circuit board to check the back too.

Found more of that white stuff, mostly around capacitors. But if you say it's normal then all good.

I did find something possibly not right. So the MOST connector on the back passes through a couple of internal optical fibres to this component:

On the flip side of this, the soldered pins looked discoulored.

Possibly even corroded?

The odd thing is that if they are, why did only these ones corrode and none of the surrounding pins?

Any thoughts? Could they be corroded? Despite the strange localised area, it would make sense I guess because the phone module is connected by MOST.

It doesn't look quite as bad from another angle but still discoulored

Just to add, I sat the board back in the unit for safe keeping till tomorrow. I then realised the location of the component is in EXACTLY the right place to have been dripped on. Also the pins aren't soldered on the top side of course so water could have just sat around each of the pins. The pins themselves look fine but the solder could have been corroding from the inside out.

It's probably just flux if its yellow/brown.
Your MOST is working fine, so that's unlikely to be your problem. Don't make it worse!

I connected everything back up for a final time before I messed about any more with it. Again I can confirm this component that reads the optical signals sits very near the front of the unit and directly under some of the ventilation holes cut into the top.

At least on one previous occasion I saw the water that had come in had gathered a little on the top rim of the fascia of the head unit. As it sits back at a bit of an angle the water had definitely gone through the gap and would have dripped onto this exact location. I'm pretty sure this isn't just flux. The solder also looked a little malformed as well as corroded. If it was just flux why would it just be these pins that looked different? I think the location and the fact that the TM communicates over MOST is too co-incidental to not be linked to the issue.

Just to be clear it was just the head unit at fault, I pulled fuse 52 and still got "Phone Mode". I then totally disconnected the MOST connector at the back...and still got "Phone Mode". Is it a correct assumption that this means it must be the head unit at fault?

Oh and forgot to mention, I ruled out the phone button on the head unit sticking as I checked live values for all buttons via IID. All were inactive until pushed including the phone button.

It could be those pins because that is the last board/component soldering in after the cleaning process.

(they may not want to dip that component into cleaning fluid)
I vaguely remember a component in mine was like this.

Anyway, as the unit is nearly scrap,

Take antistatic measures
Get a small screwdriver and see if you can clean off this stuff, and then brush it off with an old tooth brush.

It's worth connecting the mute pin up as previously suggested, but its looking like a new unit required

Yeah, as a replacement unit is still going to set me back a few hundred quid, If I have to fork out that much, I may as well look at aftermarket solutions.

I do have the high line but no sat nav or touchscreen, so whilst I would lose MOST completely, I should only lose the Harman Kardon amp and the sub woofer (if I don't buy another pre-amp for it). I guess I could sell the amp and TM in this case.

I have found these kits which allow you to fit a bunch of different aftermarket systems and (if the systems supports it) still keep the functionality of the steering wheel buttons for voice, call and hangup, volume, etc.

You can connect memory cards/ external drive with your music etc to these newer systems and of course have a touch screen. Some systems supports both Android Auto (for me) and Apple's CarPlay (for the wife). Only downside is I'm not sure how useful it is to have sat nav down in that part of the dash, seems too low to me.
