Uneven rear tyre wear - again! |
|
I was doing a few checks on the car before heading of to Spain next week - fluids, tyres etc. - I knew the fronts tyres were low 3/4 mm, however the rears were 5mm - or so I thought! On closer inspection the rears have 5mm on most of the tyre and only 2mm on the inside edge. I am not really concerned about the distance they have covered (18000miles) however I am concerned by the adverse wear pattern. The dealer service manager has said it will need checking and it is not covered by warranty after 10K!!!!
I phoned customer services and asked for advice - they advised I return to the dealer and quote the TSB, they also confirmed (verbally) that assuming the wear is not driver error? the warranty would cover the work.
The car is in the dealers today as they have to set the suspension in a checking position before their friendly tyre outfit checks the alignment. The dealer advised that if no adjustment were necessary I would be liable for the cost of inspection - fair enough, however if no adjustments are needed why have the the tyres worn as if the rear has excessive camber?
The outcome will be interesting! Some say the glass is half full. Others that it is half empty. I say 'Are you drinking that?"

Hi Andy
As you know I have had the same problems but it is the front tyres that seem to wear on my Disco, I would be very interested to hear what your dealer has to say.

Hi J,
4 wheel alignment was done under warranty yesterday! They said that some small adjustments were made.
I can see the marks on the rear adjustment bars so something has been done.
I didn't push for tyre compensation as this is only covered in severe cases i.e. under 10,000 mile. I also read the warranty book that comes with the car and tyres, wheel alignment, tracking etc are excluded from the LR warranty.
I will keep my eyes on the new tyres to see how they wear, however this will obviously be over time.
Cheers for the help.
Andy. Some say the glass is half full. Others that it is half empty. I say 'Are you drinking that?"

The old trick (SERIOUSLY old - I'm talking checking a 1967 NSU Prinz...) to test for a mis-aligned wheel was to have the car on a very smooth floor and slowly push it over newspaper; one broadsheet in front of each wheel. The sheet will be rotated inward/outward by a toed-in/out wheel, and unmoved by a parallel-set wheel. Any help?

Not yet - I only pick it up next week. Shouldn't be a problem on level smooth surface for a yard (0,9 metres) or so. I guess it would need to be in Neutral with the EPB in the OFF position....

Same on mine , inside edge of front OS & NS practically bald.I didn't notice it until BKehoe pointed it out to me recently.I had noticed a slight wobble at 80 kms and brought it in for balancing.Blanced and I still notice a slight wobble at 80 klmph and even greater at 140 - 160 ( quiet roads at 5:30 am work drive).Tracking work was carried out under warranty ( forget the mileage but can check service receipts). The tyres were replaced from OE's at about 50-60 k klms and Im currently at 81 k klms, The wear was noticed at approx 75 k klms.
Think I should push the issue more with my dealer ? ( They're a decent bunch btw).Only one more 15 k sevice left before my 100 k KLms warranty is out My fronts are actaully illegal as they are

Me too.
A month ago I noticed that my new set of tyres are showing a wear on inside edge.
A year ago I had the same and alignment was done and report showed over 1 degree of toe out.
Yesterday I went to the alignment and again almost 1 degree of toe out was measured.
Where does this setting change come from? The TSB related to this says something about
'bush settling'. For how long does it happen and what it actually means?

As a few of us seem to have been having similar problems I thought I would let you know how I have got on with a similar issue.
I had my car serviced last week and was not very amused to hear that 3 of my tyres were illegal, especially as the car has done on 20,000 miles. The wear was worst at the rear. Having looked on this site I tried to get the dealer to get have the tracking checked at their cost - an idea to which they were not terribly receptive!! Therefore I rang Landrover customer services who were very helpful, they spoke to the dealer and agreed with the dealer to have the tracking checked and any adjustments made under warranty and they have also agreed to give me a credit of half the cost of the tyres - not bad!!
I also gather from the dealer that there are a load of new tracking specs so if you car is a few years old it might be worth getting the tracking checked. Formerly a Buckingham Blue V8 HSE, Side Steps, Privacy Glass, Lamp Guards, A-Frame Protection Bar with Driving Lamps and DVD
Formerly Buckingham Blue RR Vogue SE with all the bells and whistles
Stornoway Grey Disco 4 so back in the fold.

Gentlemen
The symptoms you describe are exactly the reason I ended up changing my D3 for a FL2. From day one the car exhibited uneven tyre wear on all four, despite numerous resettings (by 2 different dealers and an independent 4x4 specialist engaged by one dealer) the problem was never eradicated. In the end got a very favourable trade in against a brand new SE FL2 in March which LR customer services also contributed.
