Update D4 Sat Nav or decent Garmin?

Hi.

My D4 is now 4 years old and find more and more routings are out of date.

Now I could have the D4 onboard system updated but believe that the cost could be in the region of £200+ Question

My gut feel tells me not to do this and for similar money go for a new portable unit with a large screen coming with lifetime updates and safety camera locations etc.

This way I could also use it in our second car which does 75% of our total miles and leave the D4 as it stands.

Prior to having a built in system have only had TomTom's in the past but some of the Garmin's look interesting.

Anyone else taken this 'route'? Rolling Eyes

Hi Griff

I have done both !! Had the D4 updated and it is now very good BUT I also have a Garmin Dezl for use with the caravan attached - it really does take notice of your size inputs and as the Dezl can be switched from HGV mode to CAR we also use it in our little MG. LR Discovery 4 XS pulling an Airstream 532 Caravan also own (since new) a 1996 MGF

Does it really cost £200 to update the Satnav? My D4 is just over 4 years old and I could do with it updating.

I would not even think of updating the onboard sat-nav unless it improves the traffic system as well as revising the maps and I don't believe it does for one moment!

I use my iPhone with the TomTom app + traffic subscription (total cost less than £50!). When I have had both systems running the onboard sat-nav has consistently given false-positive traffic warnings and failed to warn of real hold-ups while the TomTom app has been 100% correct! 2010 D4 HSE Ipanema Sand on GY DTs (was on GG ATs)
