Tidy looking motor Phil Thumbs Up

I have a couple of mates who run L322 diesels and they've spent a few quid on them, all within parameters of age/general maintenance and now have the quandary of what do you replace them with. They're worth about £10-15k and that will get you Censored all as comparable. Even upgrading to latest run out models of the same again is splashing a decent wedge of money so they've both decided to just keep them. Still has a certain cachet amongst others and they waft along in comfort. Thumbs Up

Did a 300 plus round trip yesterday my trip says 23.4 mpg not bad for a petrol v8.
It's also running lpg which is half the price of unleaded so cost equivalent means it's doing 46.8 mpg

Just enjoy it

Just had a call from the specialist who has the car.

Engine stripped and has confirmed the crank has snapped.

His exact words were "The crank has snapped completely in half".

He will be sending the report to the warranty company with pictures in the next day or so.

UPDATE FINAL OUTCOME My seized D4-question regarding repairs

Hi all,

As you know from my previous thread, my 101k miles very loved D4 snapped its crankshaft.

Latest update as of 5 mins ago is Tim Fry said that Warranty Direct were very positive on the phone regarding the repair, but in all engine replacement cases on LR cars send out an engineer to check if the crank snapped leading to failure of the oil pump leading to a seized engine, or the other way round. Tim had no idea how they can tell, but they are sending someone out nonetheless.

They have however confirmed that IF they do approve (£10,000) then it will be a re manufactured engine going in, NOT a new LR engine.

I was already in 2 minds weather to keep or sell after repair, and I would like to ask you all what your feelings are regarding a manufactured engine? Tim said he would much prefer to source a 100k miles engine out of a crashed car, but of course there will be no choice in my case. If I had a new LR engine, I probably would have done rear upper suspension arms and brake lines and kept it. I am not sure I want to keep it with a re manufactured engine so would not bother doing that extra work.

Would you keep or sell?

It's very important to distinguish between a re-manufactured engine which is re-manufactured to the original blueprints and exact specifications, and is tested to original equipment standards. A rebuilt engine, is simply repaired to rectify the failure.

It's also important in the case of a re-manufactured engine who does the work or supplies the engine, in your case preferably Land Rover not a third party. Either way you should have a properly underwritten warranty, the terms of which are important.

If you have the chance of a “new” engine from LR you’d be mad to do otherwise. Ok, it’s remanufactured but it’ll have a 2 year warranty, useful for you or the next owner. To go for a 100k lump is just starting the Russian Roulette again, with no back up. Thumbs Up

Sorry if I wasn't clear. I am not considering an engine out of a crashed car as I HAVE to just take what the warranty company provide.

Warranty Direct have said they will only fit a re manufactured engine. I have no idea where it comes from, but I doubt it will be LR, although I dont know that!

If they deny the claim, I cant afford to fix it myself and will have to sell as is (but put back together).

My personal view is that there appears to be little confidence in re-manufactured engines, and so like you I would have little confidence to say the least in its longevity. Can you not enquire of the warranty company if they would consider a cash deal for a lesser amount than £10k?

If You could agree with them say £6k, then buy a new LR engine for I believe around £3.5k it would leave enough to have the work done and perhaps a bit more. I may be incorrect as to the new engine costs but it would seem to me a cash settlement would be the way to go if they were agreeable. Perhaps even find an engine from an accident damaged car as your friend suggests and have a few quid left over.

Fine so it's a Warranty Direct re-manufactured engine.

Presumably you have a WD warranty which continues for some time. I would suggest sell whilst that warranty is still valid, and before WD do the work ask the cost of extending the warranty id there is only a small period of time to run.

Selling the car with a WD warranty & a WD re-manufactured engine shouldn't bee too difficult.

That is a very good idea Prof.

Not something that had even crossed my mind-they probably wont do it, but whats the harm in putting it forward as a proposal!
