Upgrading from 17" Help please
I have a standard 7 seater Disco 3 running on 235/70 R17 Goodyear Wranglers. When tyres are due thinking of putting larger wheels on. Is this an easy upgrade and what would be the best size. Dealer advised me to keep it on origional size wheels as replacement tyres would be much more expensive and larger tyres would wear out quicker? Had tracking done and new tyres in past under warranty due to wear on insides of rears and everything has been ok since.

Do you go off road or do you stay purely on road?
If you go off road then I'd definitely keep the 17" and put AT type tyres on - the smaller rim gives you a better depth of side wall for protection.
Even if you're purely on road I think 17" rims give you a slightly more comfortable ride and the tyres are cheaper.
If its looks you're after then 19" do look good. - especially powder coated black / dark grey.
I have both 19" (with Wranglers) and 17" (with BFG AT) on - I keep the 19" for when I have a lot of road miles to do as there is less tyre noise and marginally better MPG.
Don't know about the wearing out quicker comment - what's that based on?I see no ships........

It's probably the easiest upgrade available, keep your eyes peeled on here for 18" and 19" rims, site sponsors AJS should be able to sort the tyres for you at a price you will be happy with. They might even be able to get some rims for you

Car used on road only and yes I did wonder about dealer comment. I think larger wheels look better and more in proportion with the car, but would I be looking at a great difference in future tyre cost for say 19" that would make me

tyre prices dont always make complete sense, in so much as 20" tyres can be got for less than the price of 19's. It depends a lot on volumes produced and popularity (ie - how much the market can stand)
as for wear rate - the dealer is talking utter b@llocks, and should be ashamed of himself.
I doubt you pay much difference for a quality brand in 17,18 or 19. As has been said, have a word with Andy at AJS.

went from 18's to 19's.took longer to pick em up than it did to fit em
and ofcourse had to have mtr's put on
no looking back

Keep the 17" wheels, put some decent mud tyres on them, and come along for a drive one day. You won't regret it.
Then buy a set of 18" or 19" wheels and tyres for road use. Don't buy from the dealer. You'll get a better deal on this site or eBay. If you'd like some advice about a set of wheels on eBay, just ask for it on here and if you say you're bidding, folk won't get in your way on the auction.

Agree with SB, my D3 S has 18"ers as standard but use 17" wheels with Continental tyres. Reason for this is they are less vague than 18" & 19" road tyres, absorb pot holes better, cheap as chips (got 4 new tyres & wheels for £165 from fleabay} and get 20k miles out of a set when changed at 3mm. I use them greenlaning but for mud and snow use I've got 19" FFRR rims with muds on. Sorted!
This pic shows 18" (Rescue01 left), 17" (mine in middle) and 19" (TFC right), nowt wrong with proportions of 17"ers.

This is really helpful stuff guys If you change wheel size what happens to the spare, does this have to be changed as well?

It's usually a good idea (though not essential) to keep the spare the same size as the rest of the wheels, or go for the space saver, and put up with reduced speed when (if) you need it. there is a space save on ebay as well (current bid £10 with tyre)

Same rolling circumference so no issue, just use as if it were a spacesaver & get original fixed asap.

I am very new to this as my D3 hasn't come yet. It strickes me that these 18" wheels with tyres off ebay are really really cheap for what they are. Could anyone explain why ? As I would like to upgrade but at £299 for 18" and tyres is cheaper than replacing 4 x 17" tyres !SOLD - 23my Range Rover Sport D300 Dynamic SE
99% of the population want bling big wheels. therefore 17's and 18's (D3) and 19" (RR) wheels are seen to be low in value as everyone wants bigger.
We, the 1% see the value in getting these less bling wheels and using them with quality tyres for what we like to do - off-roading.
As popular as the forum is, we have to remember we are the minority of users. Mine is just about the only D3 that my dealership services that has mud stuck on the bottom at service time "To finish first, one first has to finish ...."
