upgrading brakes on TDV6
OK geniuses (genii?)
anyway...
I think the D3 brakes are a bit weak, the pedal travels quite a way and when the brakes do kick in they are a little remote and make stopping the discovery seem like more effort than normal.
So, firstly pads I know are low to which i have bought a replacement set ready to fit, which should deal with the pedal travel issue. Also D3 is 52K miles old and nearly 3, so i reckon brake fluid must need replacing at some point?
The Discs look ok, not too worn i think, but i reckon they can't last much longer?
Has anyone fitted upgraded discs? RRSport V6/V8 (not S/C as I know the discs are larger diameter) or drilled/vented front discs like the ones from EBC?

i don't doubt anything that can stop 3 tons of metal and rubber from a ton plus is a top braking system, but my pedal is quite spongy, and travels a good way before really kicking in.

Well you could fit the whole RRsport SC Brembo kit. A bit pricey, but will fit.
EBC produce uprated front pads DP61541 instead of DP1541, interestingly for the RRS hey list 61541 as std and upgrades to 41541R (for rear pad substitute a 2 for the last 1)
I have not tried their upgraded pads, but they claim improvements.
LR upgrade (currently) with a 4 pot Brembo calipers on the front which a number of guys on here have fitted, you will need a larger dia disc with the calipers and they will only fit inside 19" wheels, there is also a rear conversion to go with the Brembo's which uses the same rear caliper but with a larger disc and a new caliper carrier.

Well TBH ...either you have a wear and tear issue ..or you have a problem within the braking system which if has manifested itself despite servicing that could be covered under warranty.By comparison I have a 2005 06MY...and it stops on a sixpence 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

My 04 version also stops on half a sixpence, now I have had the brakes renewed. Big difference.

don't get me wrong, it stops, but the brakes feel a bit spongy! I drove a 57 plate D3 with the same spongyness, then when I had the dealers Freelander2 it stops so much more instantly, or at least feels like it does.
is a brake fluid flush easy to do, or will i need the bloomin computer?2006 D3 HSE

I think you have a problem with the brakes/system. I had to make an real emergency stop in Germany earlier this year when a lady walked across the road wheeling her bike and waving to her friend going the other way. ABS came into play and the caravan brakes locked up solid. Stopped about 10 feet (sorry 3 metres) away from her. Her face was a sort of grey picture.

B ad news for you. The RRS TDV6 has the same brakes as the D3 TDV6.
The RRS TDV8 brakes are the same as the S/C.
You can upgrade to V8 petrol front discs, uses the same calipers and pads but is a bigger disc and you need new caliper brackets to mount the std calipers on the bigger discs. Larger lever effect so a bit more servo effect and a tad more swept area so a bit less prone to fade.
Best upgrade is the Brembo discs and calipers. Biggest downside is the pads are twice the price of the std set...but they are noticeably better brakes than std.
Oh and worn pads should give you no more pedal travel than new ones, I suspect you might have either discs with excessive runout or have warped them (could be any single disc causing the pedal travel)....do you get any pull or vibration through the pedal when braking??? Unless you´ve boiled the brakes at some point I wouldn´t expect your fluid to cause any problem just yet either...
Perhaps new discs and pads all round (plus brake fluid if you are nervous about it), will restore normal (standard) service?Cheers

well Simonsi's got the brembos on his, and I've got the V8 front discs on mine (we both have TDV6's)
Right now, I cant say I've noticed an enormous improvement (although I wasn't expecting one), as a new set of standard pads and discs will be better than a worn set. Upgrade to V8 discs is really simple if you've got discs to replace anyway, as you need to take the brackets off to do this.
