Upper tailgate

Our 2015 D4s rear tailgate has started working intermittently, I've read on various threads about the issue. What I can't seem to find is if working sometimes or not at all is a symptom of the actuator or the switch?
If anyone can steer me in the right direction, thanks.

Not sure, but would have thought actuator more likely. When my actuator was on the way out it did open on occasion for a couple of days, but then stopped working completely. When you get to the bottom of it, get it sorted quickly as it's a pain breaking into the panel.
If it is the switch , then for the small additional outlay I would recommend replacing the actuator too at that age.

Funnily enough, I had exactly the same problem on my D3. The switch was absolutely full of crud but as Gary says, I'm replacing the actuator at the same time.

I found out by watching videos from Powerfuluk, that you can use the actuator from a Ford Fiesta and potentially save a few quid!

Ammdaz. Just realised you don't state whether upper or lower tailgate.

It's the upper. So after some more research today I believe it's highly likely the actuator. I've ordered a fiesta one as shown in the video above, which will hopefully arrive tomorrow. Good ol' YouTube 😂 Will update once hopefully fixed.

Ammdaz - It would be helpful if you can confirm in a day or two whether the actuator from a Ford Fiesta also works on a D4.

Did you have to get an OEM JLR switch, or have you found an alternative please?

I'm asking as I'm thinking of doing this job as "preventive maintenance" in the next few months.

So fitted the new actuator today and all working. Yes the D4 has the ford part 👍
12 quid off Amazon and half hour job 😁
Haven't changed the switch.

When the actuator starts playing up you are on borrowed time to a whole heap of crap if it fails so do it as quick as you can.
We use the D4 as the dog car so never wanting to be in the position where we are stuck with a locked boot. We fitted one of the manual release levers from LRPassion.

These are particularly worth it if you overnight in the car.

PowerfulUK sell them in the UK. A very good company to buy from and deal with. Top people.

Part number is 1481081, although I must emphasize that I did not buy an original ford part, I bought a patent part.
How to In video above 👍

That was my worry soon as my gf said is was messing about, we carry a dog most of the time as well, although our dog guard doesn't go all the way to the floor behind the seats so we could get him out if it failed.

I agree, getting the dog out through the seats is an option. I think my other worry was a total failure means i would have to damage the tailgate to get in to repair the actuator rather than just pull the lever, open it up and repair it.

Please let us know if that part has any issues down the line. Always handy to know that cheaper option last the course ( 9 years for the original)
