USB compatibility

I know this has probably been posted quite a few times, but I've read quite a few threads and not really found any conclusive answers.

Is anyone aware of a size limit for a USB drive when using to play music? My Disco is now refusing to play any USB, either by displaying connecting device indefinitely or device error. Initially I was using a PNY 16GB stick, which was fine. However, this stick gave me endless problems on the computer (especially if I used if for ISO files). Since then I've used a 128GB stick which takes ages to be recognised, an external hard drive will spin up if it's a 2.5 inch drive (5 volts rather than 12), but that is not recognised. Now I'm finding that other 8, 16 and 32GB drives are either stuck on connecting device or device error.

Some of the other threads I've read mention a software upgrade to cure the issue. Perhaps this is something I need to consider. The FAT32 file system is the obvious choice here, and I've tried EXFAT and NTFS to no avail. Ideally want to get this sorted ASAP, as I've now got no music in the car! I don't know if the cars with DVD drives can play music only from a DVD, but as my car doesn't have the ability to play DVD's I'm guessing it's a standard CD drive.

Very frustrating.

Can't help with the size question, other to say that I have a 32Gb one in my car and it's using that quite happily.

I do recall there is an issue with it handling high numbers of files/folders in the drive's root - sorry, don't know the numbers.

To get around that I have one folder - called Music, name doesn't matter! - and simply copy all my other stuff into that folder, and it's happy with that.

As an aside I also found that it can pair with my phone for 'Phone' and also with my daughter's phone at the same time for 'Audio/Music', which I thought was neat.

Thanks for the information Mark. I don't know if it helps, but my car is a 2011 HSE with the older style interface on the entertainment system. I have 15 individual folders on this USB stick at present, so I'm wondering if that is the problem. Perhaps my next port of call will be to move all of the files into one folder, or just in the root directory of the USB stick itself and see what happens.

Hmm, I wouldn't have thought 15 folders was a large number.

And I have no idea of the differences between your 2011 HSE and my 2015 SE Tech I'm afraid.

If it helps, my stick is FAT32, and in the root directory I have two folders.

One is the stuff that came with the stick (SanDisk secure tools and other unwanted bits) and the other is Music.

In Music I then have other folders (39 as it happens) which are one for each artist.

In each artist's folder I then have a folder for each album, and those contain the mp3 files.

Nothing fancy about them, they are just as Windows 7 Media Player rips them, set to highest quality.

Looking through, some are WMA files, and they play fine as well.

Folder and file names include long file names including spaces, as is normal these days. No 8.3 restriction.

Ok, so I've managed to score some success with the 'Sandisk Cruzer Dial' 16GB USB stick. I can separate my music across multiple sticks if need be.

The largest capacity stick I've used was a Sandisk Ultra 128GB USB 3.0. However, it could take several minutes before it populated the contents and played any music.
