V8 running as it's missing a cylinder at around 2000 rpm

Hello all,

Does anyone has an idea what it can be?

When accelerating around 2000 rpm say from 1750 to 2250 rpm it feels like it is missing one cylinder. It's not rough running but more like an uneven running. No lights on the dash and it just started happening Thursday evening.
Today I check with my Faultmate but no faultcodes so what can i be?

It is a V8 petrol approx 50000 km and another 12000 km to next service.

Thanks Roel

Well unless there's internal damage which is unlikely given it still runs OK most of the time it has to be either a fuelling problem or an ignition problem.

Can you isolate which cylinder it is? i.e. remove plug leads one at a time until you find the one which makes no difference.

Then check the plug & lead to that cylinder. Could be something as simple as a plug breaking down but unusual these days.

If not the plug it has to be a fuelling issue. i.e. Injector sticky, intermittent wiring connection or the injector not being fired properly. This would be a machine diagnostic job I suspect.

My guess would be either a fouled plug or a sticky injector. The electronics are much more reliable now than they used to be.

Might also be worth using some additive to your next tank of fuel that will clean the injectors in case there is a build up of deposits Thumbs Up

Possible problem with an exhaust valve burning out or a cracked head. Does it have a gas conversion fitted?

No not LPG fitted, and I think if it was that you would notice this on the whole rev range.
I have filled it up with cheap fuel and I know it doesn't really like it as normally it uses a lot more off it so giving no advantage. I had to use it as I almost run out searching for a decent fuel during a night coming home.
I filled it up with a decent fuel now and see if that makes a difference.
I will buy some Forte product against sticky valves, it can't hurt.

Roel,

I had an incident with having to use low-octane fuel and had similar results. I suspect that the engine senses knocking and retards the spark so much that the engine runs "weak" or tentative. A load of 98 Octane fixed it.

I have used a couple of tanks off quality fuel and it looks like the problem disappeared. It's a real Land Rover it repaires itselves. Mr. Green

Roel,

I just experienced the same "V7" issue. Turns out when I looked at my receipts, SWMBO had carefully filled the D3 with low-octane unleaded (at least she didn't go to the diesel pump - how can anyone with a PhD get refuelling consistently wrong? She often puts 98 octane in the Corolla). The engine just "stumbled" at around 2000 rpm. A tankfull of 98 octane solved it. If you keep receipts, you might check this (or less likely the petrol company sold you low octane in a high octane pump.)

Hello DingMark.

I know my V8 runs fine on quality euro petrol 95 octane. I normally use BP or Shell. but this time I almost run out petrol annd had to fill up on a unbranded petrol station. Half a tank later I started to have the V7 problems. I did need at least 1 tank of quality fuel before it was OK again.
