Vehicle fault, system shutting down |
|
Rights guys...
Have been getting the 'system fault, vehicle shutting down' on the radio display after central locking does its business, hazards flash, then hvac goes off, radio off, sat nav off. This has been going on for a couple of weeks now. Generally clears itself within a couple of minutes and off we go.
Also had a leaky sunroof which has now been fixed. Garage have had a good look at it and disconnected/reconnected everything from when they cleared sunroof drain issue. Fault still there. Error codes from their system points to canbus fault. They have spoken to a local LR indy and they have said either module near glove box or instrument cluster but cannot be definite on which.
Will an IID Tool be more specific or will that also just show canbus fault? If it will be more specific I will buy one.
Due away in the tintent in a couple of weeks so need to get it sorted. Anything to look for before I start throwing parts at it?
Thanks

Your Garage is correct, this behaviour is normal on the D3 when there is an issue with the canbus network OR a module that drops out of the network. Hazards on, door locks goes bananas and that message on the radio. Seen it, Done it, and Fixed it.
IIDTool can give you pointers on where to start looking, Start by writing down what modules are complaining about what module they have lost coms with and go from there.
Look at the communication network to get an overview of all the modules and how they are connected together.
All the modules are connected in series. I usualy start from the Abs module, I call it "the start of the track" and the instrument panel is the end of the "track".
Next time the car goes bananas on you, remove the negative lead on the battey Grab a MM and put it to ohm
Find the DLC (Diagnostic port) and probe pin 6 & 14. If everything is normal, then your MM should display 60 ish
If it displays 120 ish, then you know you have a canbus issue.
Now its time to slap on the investigation hat.
When I see 120 on the MM i look at the module communication network and split it in half. Trying to figure out in what direction i have to go to narrow down the search.
Go for the EAS module thats located in the A pilar Left hand side, a bit up there.
Now look for 4 wires in the same connector, they are Yellow with black trace and Yellow with brown trace. These are the Canbus wires you are after. Pin 16 to 19 is the canbus pins
Now use your MM and measure Pin 16 & 19, Should be 120.
Measure pin 17 & 18 Should be 120 ish.
find the pair that displays OL or something like that and look at the wiring diagram and see what direction to go from there
If its a 2007 / 2008 model, it might be the Instrument Cluster gone bad.

Another vote for JAS - Amazing team and very honest.
I booked my D4 in for a failed crossover pipe. That's what I suspected, that's what the internet told me it was and the fault codes pointed to as well. So they quoted me for that job, and I was ready to pay it, they called after having the car a few hours to tell me its not crossover and the bill would be less than half! They had me hooked at that point, as they could have easily charged me the full lot, and I dont doubt some garages would have. 2010 Disco 4 HSE

I've seen this fault on a friends RRS, he has had the instrument cluster replaced under warranty, but it's now doing it again out of warranty..
I found a place for him that can carry out a mod/ repair to the cluster, you send it away and they repair it and send it back, not sure of the details, but have a search and you'll fond something.

Might have to give Joe a try....
It failed again this morning. Sat 3 or 4 minutes for it to reset, which it did and immediately had another hissy fit. At which point I hit the dash and it reset and started working. I suspect instrument cluster but cannot be certain so think it needs a specialist to look at it.

Hi Mr.P and OP..
Having read this post, I would like to understand (and I have been reading and watching videos all of yesterday about the subject) how to troubleshoot the CAN BUS network on the Disco 3.
What you have advised here makes sense, but I would be grateful for some assistance.
So one of the things is knowing the topology of the network. I know that there is the High speed CAN and the Medium speed CAN. My IID doesn't seem to be able to talk to the HCAN. So it is likely a wiring issue I think. Also the car won't start (new battery has been installed).
If I can know where all the modules are located and which pins correlate to the 2 CAN BUS wires, I could do a continuity test maybe? (there were droppings found in the battery compartment where the car had been left stood for over a year - so I wonder if the wires have been chewed somewhere).
Grateful for any help/advice.
Logs below, and you can see that some of the ECU Modules (I think the ones on the HCAN are not listed).
