I saw these guys wandering around on the Plain in the area of C and CC crossing and I thought what a load of wollies.
Having done that sort of thing during my service in the Military and worked on the Plain and been in quite a few places that the public do not have access to, both on foot and by vehicle, I cannot see why anybody would want to do that for no reason other than to get dirty, waste fuel and in some cases damage their vehicles.
As for riding beside the byway instead of on it, absolute foolish, the chances of running over barbed wire, wriggly tin, earth spikes, shed track pads and allsorts of other military detria are quite high, that is why it is against the SPTA bylaws.
At the moment there is an order out that due to the exceptionally wet weather vehicles are required to stay on the tracks too, with the exception, of course, for tactical training.
Mind you, at the moment with the shortage of staff due to the down scaling of manpower when Landmarc took over, most people do what they like and there is nobody to see any of it.
A single bed and mattress has been dumped by the river Avon not far from the A345 and been there for almost a month. It was joined by a settee but that was removed after a week so someone must have had a need for that.

Hi EMcC,
I noted your comments.
I am one of that "Wollies" mentioned above.
Just to clarify few points to you:
1) We were a group of 6. Discopaw and I who are civilian. The other four, who organised the weekend, are multi-decorated high ranks military: 3 Group Captains and 1 Wing Commander. 2 of them are based based in the area.
I am sure they know very well what is to do and what is not in that area.
2) Each of us is free to use its own motorbikes and car as they like as long as it is done within law (point 1). I remind you that this is a forum dedicated to an off road car, as such it will be quite frequent to find here other "wollies" enjoying driving in the dirt.
3) Please concentrate on how you keep yourself clean, save fuel and protect yur car/bike from damages, I'll take care of myself.
4) We did some 200 miles over the weekend and we haven't come accross any "ver barbed wire, wriggly tin, earth spikes, shed track pads and allsorts of other military detria".
However out of all you wrote above this is the only constructive point, thanks for this. I will watch out for those next time.
Finally but most importantly, this is an open forum. As such everyone is free to express his/her toughts and, by any mean, at times it is good to agree to disagree.
This though do not allow you to be offensive at any time. So, next time please mind the way write and refer to other people otherwise be aware that your comments are not welcome at all.
Moreover, if I may, I suggest that before being so opinionated on what is right or wrong, what is legal and illegal, you should be better informed.

Hi Nick it was not meant to be offensive and I used the term Wollies light hearted as you didn't seem to be civilians going anywhere in particular and you did not appear to be military on exercise either.
If you knew what most of the local farmers called them, ruining their hay/fodder potential, that would probably upset you.
I Policed the Range for several years, both as a Police Officer and a Range Warden before I retired so am quite conversant with what is right and what is wrong.
I am out there most days now, in some capacity or other, and have never seen any exemptions for ranks of persons, decorated or otherwise, written into the SPTA Bylaws but I have noticed that a lot of certain ranks think the Bylaws don't apply to them.
The only advantage that I can see that they may have over others is that they may be in a position to know when an Operation is about to take place to catch the illegal off roaders, so stay away on those days.
One very, very senior army officer took his female clerk out on the range once to show her the Deer when the flags were up and the range active, his answer when challenged , " I know where the guns are and where they are firing to"
The danger was that the exercising troops didn't know he was there or that he knew what he knew.
Just goes to show Rank isn't always an indication of knowledge of the bylaws or that they are going to comply with them.
What I have noticed recently tho, is, that as a result of people riding/driving beside the byways, a lot of grass tracks are forming a parallel track to the authorised track and in due course will become mud tracks and as a result get wider and wider.
I get my Disco dirty every day going about my business but can see no reason to get it so dirty, as some of you enjoy doing just for fun, but hey ho each to his own.
Incidentally, a copy of the bylaws are posted at the entrance to every authorised track onto the Plain.

It's simple - everyone should stay on the byway and not alongside it. Easy.
