Viscous fan coupling
Afternoon all,
Hoping to tap into your collective wisdom.
My viscous fan coupling looks to have failed as the it doesn’t spin up and aircon performance is poor.
Anyone know if there is a DIY repair, or part replacement, os am I stuck replacing the whole unit - LR want £550 for a new one and £25 labour to replace it.2011 D4 XS : LHD

Do a scan of the modules, there should be a related fault code to confirm your suspicions or otherwise.yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

Got nothing on scanning, but the fan doesn’t run high on starting the engine and air con on passenger side is a bit warm.
When you look at the dan, it idles but doesn’t run at speed of engine2011 D4 XS : LHD

It doesn't run constantly unless demanded so it's usually "idle" and can be heard to engage when required. Usually though it does fully engage from a cold start as it "self cycles" and albeit for a very short period
Outside of that its so obvious this time of year.yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

Yeah, no initial startup surge, but I’m in Gib and temps are circa 15°c atm.
Might have a look with IID in monitor mode and try track it for a bit.
Shame there’s no way to set load values with the IID2011 D4 XS : LHD

Get the engine up to full temperature and go into "live values" Select both the viscous duty cycle and rpm values.
Sitting in the car raise the engine rpm to 1,500 and watch the live fan speed. It should oscillate between 250rpm and around 1,100 approx. If it's doing that in current temperatures it's doing what it's supposed to do . yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

So. Not good.
Engine warm, and fastest fan gets is 400 going downhill at 50kph.
In neutral at 1600rpm, fan sits about 200

What makes you think there is an issue with the fan.
is the car running hot!! If not thats just normal behavior for the fan. Mine doesnt surge either even when starting from cold the older types did more than the more modern ones.
Dont let poor performance of the air con get you into thinking that way as that has no influence on that.

How long did you do the stationery test for? And is the temp climbing only or fluctuating?yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

Mainly because LR mechanic has said it’s failed.
Took it in for a ‘noise’ coming from somewhere and came back as AC compressor bearing and btw fan is broke
But also got these after I posted last photo

So, none the wiser.
Oil sump temp seems a little hot but don’t know
Coolant temp seems stable and also cools

Fan should be faster at that coolant temp. yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ
