Noticed recently on some motorway runs that I hear a roar from the engine that sounds like the noise you get from the fan when starting out from cold in a morning. Only happens on long uphill legs so am wondering if the fan would intentionally kick in to keep the engine cool under these conditions? Assumed it was always going but running silently?
No other symptoms other than the fact that mpg seems to have dropped.
Any ideas? 2020 BMW X1 18d XDrive X-Line Auto

Probably your intercooler a bit blocked up with crud. 3 hours of a hose through should sort it out. Bodsys Brake Bible

Any info on how best to clean it would be appreciated, would rather do it in situ than take pipes out, Can I not use a pressure hose to clean it if I soak it first with a low pressure jet to soften the dirt? I know you have to be careful not to damage the fins. 2020 BMW X1 18d XDrive X-Line Auto

I think the issue is that you need the water to flow through the reverse of the way the crud has come in, so you need to get it out backwards. Pressure hose will damage it. It has been doen in situ, but you need to take the fan out (ISTR) to do it properly. Bodsys Brake Bible

Latest wisdom on the subject is that you can do it by just removing the top pipe out of the air filter and the top fan cover. Then there's enough room around the fan to get a low pressure hose in to remove the muck from the engine side (i.e. back the way it came instead of trying to get it all the way through the rads / intercooler.
Taking the fan off can be hard work, without LR's 'special tool'

Just had look and it is pretty gunked up, reckon most of it got in prior to fitting the mantec as it is very exposed that way (i.e. with the original plastic cover removed) 2020 BMW X1 18d XDrive X-Line Auto

Should this get done as part of a routine service ??? I was a normal heterosexual chap, but in these new woke awakenings I now identify as a Wardrobe.

IT is included in the Arduous Service Schedule service Ron - but standard service doesn't have it in
Cleaned mine out by taking off the top air filter hose and then oving the fan shroud and gently hosing it down for a few hours with a soft paintbrush to loosen up some of the crud.

I've seen this service mentioned before in respect of the EPB. But what constitutes arduous service, and how much would such an inspection/service cost at LR? Is it a set of additional checks in addition to a standard service?
