Waiting for AA...
Pressed starter button, dashboard lights come on, but engine will not turn on and dash lights go out. Earlier the fuel gauge disappeared for a couple of miles with a 3/4 tank full.
Any ideas?Andy

Thank you to the good Mrs Fitzy for posting this in my hours of need, as no signal to do it myself. Thank you to RAW too for the help.
The very nice man with the yellow van diagnosed "vacuum exhausted in the servo", so basically putting my normal pressure on the brake pedal wasn't sufficient for the car to know it was being pressed, so wouldn't start.
Battery and alternator checked and ok, so that was nice to know.Andy

Sadly not being in the least bit technical (so he could have been telling me anything), I have no idea, but it seems there was not enough pressure, so the brake pedal needed much more force to let the car register it was being pressed to allow it to start.Andy

Surely if you tried to start without the brake switch registering you would just get the warning on the dash telling you to press the brake for starting and not for the dash lights to go out?
I'm scratching my head a little and I wonder if the similarity to the issue on early D4s has thrown them - did they offer an explanation for the fuel gauge too?Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948

I had the same issues on my old D4 last month and the LRA Man located the engine earth cable under the drivers side wing had broken of on the crimp lug.
Symptoms were very similar everything showed okay and when pressing brake pedal the instruction on the dash went out but engine would not turn over!
To start with they thought the starter had gone, I pointed out there was no relay click or solinoid click and if you tried with the lights on they did not dim, a quick link of heavy duty cable from negative on battery to engine casing and away she went. MY18 RRS Autobiography Fuji White

Thanks for the link, that does sound very similar.
I didn't really register about the brake pedal until the AA man mentioned it, but it didn't feel as it normally does when starting the car and it was very hard.
That is a very good point, as it didn't ask me to press the brake, the lights all came on, sat nav screen showed the LR logo, blower started etc, then it all went off.
He didn't have any idea regarding the gauge, the illuminated MPH at the bottom of the speedo also flickered as well (earlier, not when having this problem), so perhaps some problem with the dials in general.
I will be booking it in to get that sorted out, along with a couple of other issues (including the alarm).Andy

Mine certainly didn't make a sound when pressing the starter and certainly none of the clicks I remember from my Sierra when the battery used to go flat many moons ago.Andy

Fitzy the earth is a continuas cable that has three crimp lugs on it, it goes from the Negative to the body then to the chassis and then to the engine block if at any point there is a bad connection it will give you many different electrical faults, where mine had broken it was where it had been crimped and looked like it was damaged when manufactured.MY18 RRS Autobiography Fuji White

Thanks RAW, I would like to say I will do some investing myself, but probably best I don't and thankfully it is still under warranty, so I will mention it to the dealer as a possible cause.
Did yours start in the end, or not until it was replaced?Andy

This will probably be because you will have pressed it loads while trying to start it while waiting for the yellow taxi,
If you go out and press the peddle half a dozen times without the engine running it will be very hard.26 and on the 4th LR..

It started but only when we put a new link between battery and engine as it had broken away, the ring of the crimp was still attached and where broken 90% of the lug was dirty/corroded so it had been cracked for a while before snapping. If yours is loose or corroded / bad contact and was moved by the AA man not knowingly it may have got enough contact to allow starting again. I would get it checked just to reassure yourself that it is okay as if loose or bad connection it could arc / overheat when starting. The cable has a high current load on starting but once the engine is running the current draw is low. MY18 RRS Autobiography Fuji White
