[Wanted] Land Rover 101 Forward Right-Hand Exhaust Manifold
Good afternoon collective,
I was helping my brother yesterday with his 101 Forward (I think it is from the 1970's).
Full disc brake conversion is in progress and a few pics for you to see. But the issue that he has is the cracked right-hand exhaust manifold. I understand this is a common problem on this side (and this location). Sounds like early-day crank issues
As rare as hen's teeth. There is a pair on eBay right now but the right-hand one is cracked in the same place. 101Parts (Shepshed, Leicestershire) has a stainless solution but that is £3k plus VAT for a whole system (as you need a new exhaust to match the flange positions).
So a simple request, if you know of parts available please give me a shout, thank you for looking

101 Parts should also have the OEM cast item, either repro or used. Yes the OEM manifolds are made of glass and should be treated with kid gloves - there is little point trying to weld them together as they soon break again.
A RR P38 drivers side stainless manifold will also fit but it will breath different to the OEM left side (not such an issue) and require mods to the exhaust to match up.

My brother has been talking to Martin at 101Parts and he has no cast ones (long since sold out I believe) and is out of stock on the stainless kits (which are manufactured by a company called Demand Engineering here in the UK).
He has had many bits from 101Parts over the years - not a cheap hobby! Bit like owning a Disco

I missed that bit. Unfortunately, the so-called standard Rover V8 SDi does not fit. They fit the ports (stud fasteners) but are too 'fat' to miss the bodywork and the exhaust aperture is all wrong.

Ah that’s a shame , think I read it ages ago somewhere
Hopefully ur be able to sell them on , think the last time I saw a sdi was at the Bromley pageant but don’t think they run it anymore , was so nice seeing the classics that I grew up with
Talking of exhaust saw a guy on utube use like a dummy kit to make up manifolds etc and how the pipes had to all be the same length
Sorry am waffling as per usual

As garrycol says, a RR P38 manifold might be a good starting point as the location & angle of the collectors looks to be in the right sort of ball park. You may need to cut & shut the offside one as it’s got a longer collector to the flange. A quick look on the ‘bay shows them as readily available & often with the end of the exhaust still attached so could be used to graft the 101 down pipe to?D4 - Stornoway Grey

Cast Manifolds
What sort of money would a new cast exhaust manifold be worth - there may be an angle to reverse engineer and cast new ones - I was involved in a project to do the same with other historic vehicle partsMust stop buying shiny toys....

As a temporary measure I would go the P38 drivers side manifold - bolts straight on. The OEM manifolld on the passenger side does not seem to impact the engine al that much.
Here you go some other options - all available in the UK but not sure from where.

The main issue with using other LR manifolds like D1 and D2 on the 101 is the engine mount position on both sides and on the passenger side, the chassis also runs too close to the engine - even worse if a winch is fitted as one of the pullies is in the way.

What disk brake kit have you got - I have had a Zeus kit fro over 10 years to go on but never got around to it. They have a design issue where the bolts that hold the actual disk to the rest of the disk housing are over torqued and cause the disk to develop thermal fatigue cracks from the bolt holes. Easily fixed by removing the bolts before installation and re torquing at a lower spec and using a good permanent thread locker to stop them moving. The lower torque allows the disk to expand and contract without cracking the disk.

The brake disc kit came from 101 Parts in Shepshed, Leicestershire.
The discs are machined so that they are the hub, bearing carrier for the half shaft and the offset spacer, if that makes sense, all as one machined piece.
Not cheap and the written instructions with them were poor leading to a lot of phone calls to the supplier (who now says he’s greatly improved them).
None of this could be labelled off-the-shelf.

Yes the 101 Parts kit is better than Zeus but much more expensive.
