Warped discs

Have been experiencing shudder through the steering wheel when braking from 50mph down to 0 mph. Had all wheels rebalanced to eliminate them from the problem and shudder still there. Have spoken to local dealership and they have diagnosed warped discs, over the phone! D4 booked in for early March to resolve the problem, under warranty.

Has anyone else experienced this type of shudder under braking?

had it twice now, once on old D3 after a new set of discs fitted - had to replace again, and got it right now after new pads fitted (but still on original discs). It was fine before new pads going in.

2005 Discovery 3 TDV6 HSE Auto Java BlackDiscovery 3

I had it this week, stratstone fitted new pads and discs to the front, driving home down the motorway braking anything above 45 the steering wheel shook really bad. I took the car in and they found the discs was warned to 0.1mm when the max is apparently 0.05mm. Bear in mind these wasn't genuine LR parts, and when they found this fault they decided to put genuine on for there cock up free of charge

2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 S Auto Zambezi SilverDiscovery 3

Had this before on a previous one year old car, was told by the garage I'd probably done some braking over a long distance then when came to a stop kept the brakes on, thus heating the disc where the pads are still clamped tight onto it. Didn't know if this was b Censored ks though

Folk taking cars to track days are advised not to put the parking brake on after a session as the hot discs can and do warp - that's why racing cars are chocked. Brakes under track conditions get incredibly hot - high speed, hit to just before binding and release - one activity with no feed in or feed out.

I can't imagine road use would cause such a problem.

posted elsewhere on the forum I have had two sets of discs on the front and one on the back with only 15k on d4 seems to be sorted this time.
LR where not to chuffed but think the warping was due to the brake bias hope you get sorted

I have send out 12 requests to UK/European brake disc manufacture (rather than stockists or importers) over the last few days asking a number of question relating to warped discs, poor fitting grooves types of pad etc,

I have had 4 written and one verbal response so far, when I get a few more I plan to collate the info and I'll post it up. the responce so far is interesting.

After talkng to a lot of these disc manufactures, suppliers, designer etc is that in general discs are not warped when fitted
.
If you have a vibration as soon as you have changed the discs it normally means the disc face has not been cleaned properly and need removing and the hub face cleaning.

If the vibration appears after 1000-2000 miles if is likley to be as MJ suggested above, after a longish drive or reasonably heavy use you(or someone) has sat with their foot on the brakes. The heat in the pad has trasfered to the disc, and warpped it.

Can definitely happen when doing something like towing a trailer, pulling up to a junction after a bit of a distance with foot pressed on brake, then at the very last pressing the brakes hard to stop (e.g. you were coasting up to a give way sign, then seen there was traffic coming) and then keeping the brake pedal fully depressed

I would have thought this was more prevalent on autos - touch wood I've got a way with this so far even with some self inflicted scoring on the back discs Embarassed
