Warranty, take the risk or a V8...
Hi everyone
Trying to decide if it’s worth paying £1600 for a 3 year warranty from WD for my 2012 D4, primarily to safeguard against engine failure or take the risk as it’s unlikely to happen based on around 1.3% chance of failure. If it did fail without warranty, I’ve heard of £10k + for a new engine or around £4K for a re-con, anyone got any thoughts on whether those prices are realistic for all in costs?
Also, as a curve ball, if it did fail, is it feasible to get rid of the knackered SDV6 and fit a petrol V8 instead? Or would it be astronomically expensive? Any thoughts on that?
Thanks for reading!

If you want a V8 (note you can’t get a newer one then MY13, it’s SCV6 after that) get one? There’s been a few threads of people wanting to import one from Japan or South Africa.

1600gbp is an awful lot of money, so WD obviously think its a bit of a risk!

Just over £500 a year. Sounds good. What does it cover / exclude?

There is probably a lot higher chance of you getting your money back on suspension warranty claims than an engine.
Ive had a warranty direct policy for the last 3 years on my D4. I think I've always had more money back in repairs than the policy costs.

Thanks guys,
That 1600 is for their core policy which covers Engine, gearbox, transmissions, ECU , casings, turbo, flywheel and drive plates
Interesting what you said about recovery on suspense, that add-on policy is another £2k for the years!!

It is a 6/7 year old car, and will be around 10 at the end of that, I would say that’s not bad, only need a gearbox problem. It’s 650 for three years coming of off OEM warranty at just under 30k mikesJoined the BMWX5 45e group
