Water loss issue

Guys I’ve got a issue now that’s happened to me 3 times over past month. I seem to be going through more water than usual in me discovery 3 TDV6. Now I know we’ve been in some hot weather in UK lately but I’m not convinced it’s cause of this. I can be driving along and suddenly the temp gauge will rise up to the max and the light will come on - car feels kinda sluggish then.

Happened 3rd time today just as I was almost back home (thankfull) - the temp gauge went to the max and light came on. When I got home I lifted the Bonet and the water container did look empty however when I released the cap the air intake suddenly made the water rush through and fill up the container 2/3rds full again. I could hear a hiss of what sounded like air escaping somewhere in the middle of the the fan maybe.

The water was very hot so I let it cooled down and then topped it back up with fresh water.

Any ideas ?

Going by your last post regarding starting, you sure its not a head gasket? Water into cylinder therefore locking the engine.

Eventually water will seep past the piston hence after a few tries it will go.

Check your oil that will soon tell you.

I had the same gradually got worse till I was putting 2 litres of water in a day. Had it pressure tested turned out to be a little plastic type manifold on top of the engine which splits water into the two heads under the air intake. £50 fix all fine afterwards.

Guys

Ok this sounds good advise, in the photo is that it when it was in need of repair or should it look like that ?

Yesterday when I topped the reservoir up I could hear what sounded like air / water hissing out and the water landing on hot surface as I could hear what I thought was water on hot plate sizzling away ??

Like a Censored about 4 weeks ago I put some STP ( I think the brand name is) water treatment sip lean in me reservoir (even though at the time I never had a blooming leak however the bottle was sealed but like 15 years old - wish I’d never put it in now Sad

I’m thinking it looked a bit gloopy as I outed it in, wonder if it’s caused a blockage somewhere. I’m just praying it not the head gasket but don’t know how to tell.

What do I need to remove them to get to this photo above, wcan I actually see the pipe ???

No, that’s how it looked after it split. Was an interesting experience as we were 8,000ft up a mountain in Andorra, and, to add a bit of spice, in the middle of a thunderstorm.

Made for a fun recovery. Thumbs Up

And got repaired at about 6,000ft the next day. Thumbs Up

the last pic with the pipe that comes off with the blank in it at front of engine, the other end of that pipe the plastic unit is what your looking for. also looks like a lot of mud on engine, hope your radiator is cleaner than your engine otherwise that could cause you some problems. also i am sure ive read that the egr valves have water pipework that can leak too. easiest way to get tested is a pressure test, if its a external leak it will show straight up and lastly there is a procedure with these when refilling water/coolant to get rid of air locks.

Simple things first
Is the cooling fan actually doing any cooling? ie is the engine overheating because it cannot cool itself down?
Have you bled the cooling system to make sure theres no air in it?

Pressurising and forcing the coolant low does sound like a head gasket issue.

If there are no external leaks and if you had a weak spot with a failing head gasket they would soon fail if they were weak in any way.

Hi, no it’s not mud it’s the spongy cover that’s broke up from the bonet unsulation.
