Yes, wastewater treatment is far more complex, energy demanding process, therefore significantly more expensive. The population has much to learn about what should / should not be disposed via the sewerage network.
The desalination plant is a component of drinking water production - the cheap part. I would presume it needs to be there to provide resilience. This will be detailed in a DWI notice to Thames Water, requiring them to construct it. The running cost (electricity + chemical) of the desal works means that it's cheaper not to run it at times when you don't need it.
Now consider what the future direction of water & wastewater bills is, with the current trend in commercial electricity costs...Long succession of Disco's since 2001...

We are lucky where we are as i only pay £168 a year for our water, we have no mains drainage so all waste water and rainwater drains out into the fields around us, and sewage is courtesy of septic tanks only.
So i view it as a bargain but still try and conserve where possible.2011 D4 XS 305 MY12 - gone but not forgotten
The stupid thing about hosepipe bans is it is the use of the hose that's illegal. I used to wash my car with pumped stored rainwater and got a visit from the water people (presumably after being reported by a neighbour). They said that it was a really good idea and to carry on.

So, doing some joined up thinking here ...
Wind-power is least reliable when it's colder weather but could be used at other times of year to split sea-water to get Hydrogen which can then be stored.
When the Hydrogen is then used to generate electricity, the by-product is water. Which isn't salty so could be safely stored then pumped into the tap water supply.
There must be a flaw in this ... it's probably a good starting point for a debate after a few beers though.

The flaw is putting the water into the tap supply, rather than using it to make the beer needed to debate the concept. An ex-Disco3 / FFRR / I-Pace owner ......
Have two systems for sewage. Separate the solids: treat and recycle the water content in a more efficient way; extract all the drugs that pass-through without being modified (cheaper than making them).
horse pushed down a post yesterday. The water-pipe attached to it was flowing unchecked for many hours. I only noticed when I saw water running in the ditch.
That makes 121 posts he's knocked over by scratching his bum on them.

2,953 million litres of water is lost EVERY DAY in the UK before it gets to the taps… the water companies would do better addressing this as well as reducing usage… I wonder what percentage of the daily amount processed that is?I want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van...
