I think 500 litres of it, treated and delivered to my tap, there whenever I want it, for £1 is the bargain of the century. A massively undervalued resource. Long succession of Disco's since 2001...

Agree. It is cheap for the service.
I've given up explaining this to my Father who has numerous 1000litres rainwater tanks at his place / recycles and pumps water from one tank to another for extra capacity. He plumbs this direct into his WC feed with the potential for cross contaimanation, has grit traps set up ..... all to save 1.5p per 9 litre flush. I will not be going into the flushing regime to save water, which I fully ignore.
Tanks, pumps and equipment probably cost £500 back in 2007. About 31250 flushes at today's cost.
I suggested PV back at that time at the generous FITs period which he told me wasnt worth it

We're looking at increasing our rainwater collection / storage but not for toilet flushing. It's for plants. Most do better with rainwater than tap water and some absolutely hate tap water - blueberries, I'm looking at you.
I have some sympathy with using rainwater to flush toilets - using drinking water to flush waste away does seem to be wasteful (ahem), but I guess we've got used to having abundant drinking water whenever we require it. Hence we have dual flushes / and low capacity WCs and cisterns. 9 litre flush is pretty old school, 4.5 / 3 normal now.
Out of numerous projects, I've only completed one with grey water recycling and that was some 15years ago plus. But I have incorporated numerous rainwater butts into schemes for landscaping provision.

Sadly no environment concerns with my Father. Its the perception of saving money only. Currently cutting down numerous established trees within his garden to make it easier to mow the lawn.

I was told quite recently that we, the consumers, only pay for approaching half what it truly costs. The government effectively cover the rest by paying for "projects" the water companies work on. I assume he meant new and replacement pipes. .
