TBH I am surprised some of them are so 'low' - IIRC Pogba's salary was north of £15million a good few years ago
Some of them are only just younger than 30 (Bale and Sturridge) - Messi is (I think) 32 and his basic salary is £25 million +Currently 2009 Disco 3 SE, 2013 MY D4 HSE and 2016 D4 SE

Can’t blame the players who wouldn’t get paid those huge sums if they had the choice, it’s the system in place that can afford to pay them that needs looking at.
What strikes me looking at those names is how average a player you can be to earn very big money.
I used to watch a lot of football in the 80’s and 90’s and very occasionally go and watch Arsenal these days and whilst without doubt the players are a lot fitter than they’ve ever been, as a spectacle it seems more like a game of chess than the game I used to watch.
Of course that could just be moany old man syndrome setting in Discovery 4 HSE

Lewis Hamilton is only a few years older than Bale and worth about double at near £250m. Not bad for driving a car, eh?

Hasn't Hamilton arranged things so that he's a tax exile? The footballers might be getting paid large sums of money, but something approaching 50% will be going back into the Exchequer through tax and NI. That pays for a lot of doctors and nurses.

Good point. All of the recent well paid drivers are/were tax exiles. Lots of people hammer Hamilton about it, but conveniently forget Button and Coulthard also moved out when they started to earn decent money. Nothing new there - Jackie Stewart lived away for many years too before moving back to the UK for his retirement / to look after his ill wife who has dementia.

Whilst there are some complete to55ers that the media like to expose, the vast majority of the players do a hell of a lot of good through charity work - especially childrens hospitals and homes, but numerous other 'unseen' examples too.
I don't blame them for earning what they do - hell, I would have done the same if I didn't have two left feet - it is 'the system' that has led to such huge wages. Worth also remembering (and I can't belive that I'm sticking up for footballers) that their money coomes from TV and advertising sponsorships. If people didn't watch in huge numbers a huge cost, the money wouldn't be there to pay them.
There are lot of comments that nurses and doctors don't earn anything like the footballers (and I have a vested interest, being married to a doc) - but no one would want to pay the taxes needed to put them on an equal footing.
And capping the salaries of people in the private sector is communism.

Anyone with Amazon Prime and a passing interest in footie should watch 'All or Nothing' - it really opened my eyes to the work which players have to put in, day in, day out.
Sure, they're very well rewarded for it - but it's a hard shift, even allowing for the money.

I think that applies to all top line sports people, be they footballers, rugby players, track and field athletes, F1 drivers etc. They all put in the hard yards to get there and stay there. The amateurs that do it all and hold down jobs too are really impressive to my mind.Visiting from rrsport.co.uk
