weird - rust in all cylinders

My Discovery 4 3.0l overheated due to loose water tube.
Car had been waiting snce april for deciding what to do.
Now the engine is at Oval Motors for rebuild.
Crankshaft and bearings seems to be ok, but there is rust in all cylinders which made them seized and even the valves.
Oval motors thought the engine had been under water, but nothing like that. It has just been in the car waiting.

Any ideas how this can have happened?

Possibly a blown head gasket, the leaking water tube being a side effect of same. There are other possibilities too but its really a guessing game without more info. Hope you get it sorted without too much pain!

Depends to what extent it overheated, the sequence goes like this, remaining water boils leading to loss of water and circulation, stop engine at this stage and allow to cool before refilling and little damage is done, continue driving the temperature gauge will gradually drop to cold as there is no water to gauge, continue driving and the cylinder head gaskets will blow resulting in moisture getting into the cylinders(your condition), continue driving the cylinder heads will warp or crack and the cylinders will warp and the engine will seize resulting in a scrap engine.
The time factor of the above is very short, I have never known an engine (of any make)that has seriously overheated run and perform as it should even after being repaired at great expense without a new block being fitted, symptoms like poor starting, excessive oil consumption and poor performance have always shown up
Signs of overheating is the first thing I look for when buying a car!

Possible explanation.
Engine overheats and steam fills the engine bay.
Steam is drawn into the engine via the air inlet/air filter assy.
The steam will strip the oily deposits from the cylinders and valves etc.
If the engine is simply turned off and allowed to cool down without being run again the steam just condenses inside the cylinders with resulting corrosion.
The longer the engine is left the worse the corrosion becomes.

I have never experienced this personally but entirely agree with what M3DPO says.

I would seek advice from Oval Autos before committing to rebuilding this particular engine. It might be better to source an engine which has a "clean" history, maybe from a write-off & rebuild that.

Good luck.

Thumbs Up any sign of discoloration through heat on the engine block or cylinder heads means its a scrapper regardless of the internal rust, the only good news is the crank should have survived . Twisted Evil
