What’s the best MPG you’ve got out of your D4

Thought I would see what’s MPG I could get out of my 2015 D4 HSE. So driving from Ferndown to Southampton this afternoon which involved single carriagway, dual carriageway and some Motorway. I set the Cruise Control to 65mpg once on the dual carriageway and coming off the slip road at Southampton I was getting 35.4 mpg. I was pretty happy with that.

34.52mpg (actual, not lie-o-meter) over 489 miles for D4, 37.72mpg (again actual) for the D3. Both long hauls on cc at 60mph. Thumbs Up

Long term average, 31.12mpg over 15,438 miles for D4, 26.99mpg over 165,092 miles for D3. Thumbs Up

England 2012 Discovery 4 3.0 SDV6 HSE Auto Nara BronzeDiscovery 4

Due to reasons I wont bore you with, a month or two ago I had to make 3 trips from home in south Essex to Peterborough and back, within 7 days. It was surprising the difference in MPG the on-board 'puter gave me on each trip (as said, its not actual fact, but I am guessing its constantly inaccurate, if you see what I mean)
1st trip was early Sunday AM, not much traffic, steady 70, got about 31.
2nd trip was PM midweek, much more traffic on the road, but didn't particularly slow me down, so similar speed (and therefore similar journey time) and got 33 mpg
3rd trip back, I was following my dad who was towing a caravan, so I was at very steady 60, but more importantly tucked nicely behind his caravan - got 37 mpg.

My conclusion - I know the disco has the aerodynamic properties of a garden shed. 3rd trip was always going to be better, but 2nd trip was better than the 1st, because I was in traffic, following 'white van man' or just following cars, so they kindly punched a whole in the air for me.

Not scientific, but interesting.

Did a couple of overnight jobs in central London last summer & after two days of driving up from rural Hampshire via A3 & back again with zero traffic & observing the relevant speed limits (no other traffic to hide in & avoid plod plus speed cameras everywhere) the average for around 250 miles was...

Thought that was pretty impressive but managed to get the lie-o-meter to beat that on a run of about 50 miles coming back from the engines first service (it was replaced by dealer with a new unit when I bought the car) back in February this year. A combination of rush hour traffic in town, then 40mph & 50mph speed limits through road works on cruise control followed by rush hour motorway speeds.

I know it's the lie-o-meter but I was pretty impressed just the same - seems the secret is to keep a steady speed, not too fast, & avoid sudden acceleration or deceleration, obvious I guess!?

I find that the difference between driving into a head wind and having a tail wind can make a significant difference in mpg on the D3 & D4

Press the button on the end of the indicator stalk, you will then scroll through total miles, Average Speed, Average Fuel, Instant Fuel etc. Also hold down the button on the end of the stalk to reset Trip A.

^^ only if you have trip A selected. You can display so it starts for scratch at every journey, but then you can hold the indicator button and it adds this journey stats to the last journey. RTFM Wink

Bit of a backward step in the D4. To get basic info (odometer, trip & mpg) you have to scroll through everything but in the D3 it was all there if set how I liked it.

Although it said 39.3 above, the actual was 32.1mpg. Beware of the lie-o-meter, it is as useless as a useless thing in the useless season. Thumbs Up

Particularly if you've got the tin tent on the back Laughing
