Energy firms who are making record profits ignoring the government’s instruction to stop forcing prepayment meters on people who can’t afford to pay their bills, because it’s a way to circumvent the rule that they can’t cut people off, and even worse, ignoring the rule about not doing it to vulnerable people.
But what really gets my goat up is that they can only do this with the collusion of courts, who are there to uphold the law, and who aren’t checking facts on the thousands of requests they are approving.

If only the Government would unlink the energy sources, people on green tariffs (those that buy their watts from renewable sources) would pay less. That would do two things - it would reduce bills and it would cause market forces to drive the grid towards 100% renewable sources. Both of which are supposedly things that the Government wants. Of course, the fact that they have to charge too much for their watts means that the renewable sources now have to pay windfall payments. Hmmm, something fishy from the Government there, methinks...Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

It’s mad isn’t it. We got lucky with a fixed deal 18 months ago, but keeping your family warm shouldn’t be down to luck.

Another goat getter - Government brings in new rules for log burners and the enforcement thereof. Fair enough, air quality is an important issue and smoke reduces air quality.
Try to find out if we're in a smoke control area (SCA). Go to council's website to check. That directs to DEFRA's online mapping system that shows SCA boundaries. Cool. Except it doesn't work. Typical.
Can anyone get this to work? https://uk-air.defra.gov.uk/data/sca/Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

Is it an issue if you burn authorised fuel?
“A smoke control area is an area where people and businesses must not:
emit a substantial amount of smoke from a chimney
buy or sell unauthorised fuel for use in a smoke control area unless it’s used in an ‘exempt’ appliance (appliances which are approved to use in smoke control areas)”
I use a moisture meter for my wood and buy “authorised” smokeless fuel.
Once the stove is up to temperature, there’s little if indeed any visible smoke from the chimney.2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

A tightening of emissions regulations has reduced the amount of smoke new stoves can emit per hour from 5g to 3g.
How is this going to be measured/enforced? Are we going to have government enforcers coming round when you fire is going to check the amount of smoke it is emitting?2013 RR Vogue SE SDV8

If one wants to burn normal wood then it might be. The benefit of a log burner is that one can source wood for little or no cost. If you were to get fined £300 for burning that wood then it might be a bit annoying.
Edit: having now been able to access the map, seems that most rural locations aren't affected (so far) with the SCAs being mostly urban centres. Most of London and, interestingly, most of the old coal regions from Nottingham up through to Wakefield.
Interesting that Bath and much of Bristol are SCAs but Swindon isn't. I guess there's a historic aspect to the locations.Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

My guess is that it's just a way to allow the local authority to deal with smoke complaints more easily. Quite how they will actually test the appliance in situ is another question.
It just means that the manufacturers will spend more money redesigning their appliances to emit less smoke. I guess that will make log burners even more expensive to buy.Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

I’ve only just got a moisture meter, but I’d guess that historically most of the wood I’ve burnt would have complied with the 20% moisture rule. As the final stage of seasoning/drying is to be stacked by the side of the stove for a few days before burning.
My stove runs 24/7 for most of the winter months, so I burn a mix of wood and smokeless coal. With the latter it’s easy to keep the stove going all through the night.2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE
