Think it’s time to draw a line under this particular branch of this thread. Not worth everyone getting hot under the collar about - move on please.

As far as word censorship on here goes, there’s a default list that I have slightly altered over the years but clearly I can’t be expected to catch everything nor justify the existence or not of a word on the list.

I’m not following the thread, I’m acting upon the report received about the arguing.

Well I for one have found some comments interesting sometimes confusing but with a little bit of research informative.

Now this one confused me, is there a village/town in Scotland?

Oh, no.....wait....

Not that I can find reference to however

Quote:

Alba (English: /ˈælbə/) is the Scottish Gaelic name (pronounced [ˈal̪ˠapə]) for Scotland. It is cognate with the Irish term Alba (gen. Alban, dat. Albain) and the Manx term Nalbin, the two other Goidelic Insular Celtic languages, as well as contemporary words used in Cornish (Alban) and Welsh (Yr Alban), both of which are Brythonic Insular Celtic languages. (The third surviving Brythonic language, Breton, instead uses Bro-Skos, meaning 'country of the Scots'.) In the past these terms were names for Great Britain as a whole, related to the Brythonic name Albion.

And today’s homework is to discover why people from Barnsley call people from Sheffield: “dee dars”. Wink

Probably due to strong Yorkshire accent now you could argue exactly what the words Dee and Dar actually mean but Dee could represent the and Dar could be there..

Must admit when I go to Scotland or Ireland I sometimes struggle with the accents and it might take me a bit of time to tune my ears in.

Over the years accents have soften, however grand daughter born in London is now beginning to talk with a Scottish accent/words. Just hope it does not become broad Glaswegian.

Todays homework now completed, so can I go out to play now Sir?

What's got my goat today..... Billy, Nanny and Kid? How thin skinned people are nowadays and the fact that it's taken to a court of law!

Yeah I have been called names before that I didn't like but oh dearie me, how could I go on with life???

Now, mean & nasty stuff used a general abusive rant should get called out and does I hope, but that should be cut down as a bad attitude in general. But mild Censored taking nicknames is a different thing and should be able to be used in a give and take banter atmosphere.

Dee is ‘dee dar’ for thee. Dar is ‘dee dar’ for thar.

Quote:
Thar/thee - 'Thar' is the informal singular 'you' but is slowly falling out of use. 'Thee' is the accusative form of 'thar'. It also takes the same verb conjugations as he/she/it. E.g, Tha drinks (You drink)

Praise where praise is due:

VIcki@Craddocks in conjunction with her colleagues and DPD have provided unshattered glass, handling the situation in quite the best way imaginable.

A nice end to the week!
