What's wrong with my tyre?

Turns out it was most probably the wheel at fault.

The rim was very thin.

I had decided to bite the bullet in new tyres and when that one was off I asked the fitter to check it. He said he wouldn't trust it on his car. So it was binned and one of my winter tyres taken off and a new tyre put on that rim.
