Wheel nuts can expand?

Hi
I’ve detected several references to swollen wheel nuts but can find no explanations to help me sleep. How/do the wheel nuts expand in size needing a larger socket? Metal does not grow. What is this sorcery? Havn't I already got enough to worry about...

I think they start to go rusty inside the stainless steel cover and then expand.

So what should I be replacing the wheelnuts with.? Is it all of them or just the locking nuts?
Is it just a case of replacing them all once every 5 years or so?
Thanks
 Gary

The inner wheel nut rusts and pushes the outer skin out hence needing a bigger socket to take off.
 Must stop buying shiny toys....

Also, over time with constant torquing they will twist.

So, order a pack of 20 Bearmach nuts off eBay to replace all existing nuts and locking ones.
You then know every one is new and not about to swell and leave you stranded on side of road.
Check every 6 months and replace as needed.

If you don't mind a hole through the middle, cut the covers off.

Some were really easy others took ages.

I think using rattle guns on the nuts also thins the cover so it expands. I have taken the cover off a couple and found no corrosion. My Ford BMax has exactly the same problem, same design.

You can get a set of 20 chrome/black/red/etc nut covers for less than £5 on the Bay.
