Mine doesnt make any noticeable wind noise that ive noticed
Actually I think it is more the air travelling through the snorkel that I'm hearing.

Don't worry Norto, it only goes on for off road trips. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

IMHO I wouldn't have a D3 without some sort of snorkel! The amount of crap that gets sucked in through the side vent is incredible. The flat air filters are not much of a barrier. Mine had sand in bottom, leaves and little bits of gravel. The hose that runs through the inner guard holds water, mine was still wet two days after I washed the car ( not good for paper filters). None of my previous 4WDs have sucked in that much stuff!
By one and fit it yourself, it's an easy step by step fitting process. Live it like it's your last!

Have to say prefer the look of LR RAI, seems to fit the car better. Like caverD3 unit cause its removable. Would only fit once I had left populated areas though!!
Re muppo's report on crap in filter can't say I have noticed any more than usual despite doing at leat 30k a day on our very dusty road.
caverD3 what issues did you have in deep water?? 2.7 D4 eDiff, Traxide Dual battery, Safari Snorkel...Opposite Lock winch bar..extra set 17" wheels with 245/70/17 BFG KM2 MTs..Warrior winch..Long range tank.
1982 2dr RRC renovated.
1983 Range Rover 2dr fitted with 300Tdi (with bigger turbo), 40mm body lift, Warn 9000i winch and BFG MT 265/75/16. Rear Maxidrive locker
1976 Landcruiser BJ40 with tipper body for the farm!!

Dusty roads isn't much of a problem, it's more heavy off roading when the front right tyre throws up crap into the intake! Live it like it's your last!

Water problem:
Driving across the Kowmunge after heavy rain, just before I got to the south side the D3 dropped ito an unexpected hole. Water up to the itake. due to the water build up on the upstream side.
Just coming out the far side engine dropped to idle; Engine fault in message centre. Revs eventually picked up but message persisted. followed by special programs not available and Park brake fault. All messages dissapeared after switch off and re-start.
Decided I needed a snorkel but didn't want holes in wing. Also coated the modules and connectors behind the battery with CRC 'Plasticote'.
The ideal snorkel would be a LR RAI attched to my vehicle with the plate I have made and sealed = good looking removable snorkel. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

CaverD3
Just picked up Disco from Lance Dixon after having lower control arm bush, 2 balljoints, new control arm and rear sway bar bushes replaced under warranty. Seems bit much after only 80,000k. While there had a look at LR RAI and it seemed pretty good although any Disco3s with RAIs in their car park all had Safaris. Price they quted was just over $600 not fitted so bout same price as Safari. Still a bit undecided which one to go for.
You were lucky no more probs after switching off and on after your water problem. There is definitely something to be said for have RAI for water crossings cause there could be deep holes where you least expect.
Out of interest where is the Kowmunge?

Meant Kowmung. Blue mountaims caves to caves route.
An unmodified LR RAI would let water into the air box through the porous hose and religious rubber bends if you got stuck in deep water.
Not a snorkel but as others have said it will stop you picking up the dirt at lower levels. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€
