Which snorkel

Want a snorkel for my TDV6 Disco. Which one should I go for Safari or Landrover? Also have read that they are not perfect sealed where they enter bodywork?? Bit of feedback would be good.

I think the Safari is sealed (water proof) but LR is really a "rasied air intake" not a snorkel (its not water tight BUT can be made to be). Various threads on this site - check under modifications!

Really a true snorkel is not worth the effort unless you have an old fashioned diesel. Anything new like the Disco has electronics and computers at the high end of the engine bay.

The Land Rover RAI and the air intake path and air box are all designed to shed water into air filled body cavities of the vehicle before they get to the engine. The rated wading height of 700mm is well below the height of alternators, transmission breathers and electronic componets for a reason.

The Safari snorkel is a choice because it does add extra filtration of dust but is redundant as a water protection device due to the overall design of the vehicle. Without substantial careful work around the engine electronics a true snorkel is overkill. IMHO of course.

Ultimately though we each do what we feel is best for our purposes and the conditions we want our vehicle to cope with.

All the best

Ianv

I also have a safari - mainly because it was cheaper than the LR one . IMHO it does not look as nice as the LR one and makes a lot more wind noise when driving

reAT2s

Hi BlackPerth,
Notice you are running AT2s. How are you finding them? What pressure do you run offroad? Have been considering some Cooper S/Ts for my now redundant 17" wheels mainly cause there is a bit more rubber, better in the mud and can run them lower pressure than 18" AT2s.
Regarding the RAI (snorkel) and Ianv's comments I can fully appreciate that you can't run a Disco 3 under water due to the electronic stuff under the bonnet. Also heine comments that the Landrover one makes a lot more windnoise than the Safari one. Did you notice any increase in wind noise when you fitted yours?
What's IMHO short for?

Nope the other way around - the safari makes more noise . Probably becuase of the more exposed intake

Looks better???? Shocked Shocked not withstanding all the previous mass debates about wading depth, breathers, HVAC intakes etc. to my eyes it looks like a Ostrich head & neck has been transplanted onto the Disco3 - at least the 'jerry can look' matches the lines of the Disco 3 and is invisible from the drivers seat Wink

I havn't had a chance to test it in deep water since I mader it and put Plasticote on the electrics behind the battery. They graded the Kowmung crossing when I went back. Sad
Has anyone been in deep water and had issues other than me?
