I wonder if anyone has had this one or knows what it might be, I have a whining noise from the engine compartment sounds like it is from the front part of the engine, almost like an electrical interference sound which changes pitch with increased revs, this is there as soon as you start up in neutral so not transmission whine, it was diagnosed as the power steering pump but they changed that yesterday and it is still the same. It does not seem to affect the car but is annoying.

I have just borrowed an electronic stethoscope from work, waiting for the rain to stop and have a listen.

I had a very irritating whining noise all the time when I was driving, load or no load. It was louder when I was hurrying if I was late and at other, more random, times too.
Mind you, it went away when the ex-wife left.
Well, someone was going to say it sooner or later so I figured that it might as well be me. I'll get me coat...

We had some 'chassis ears' attached to ours to determine a low whining noise when under load. Dealer then checked a few D3's and they did the same thing. An EPQR was then filed, as yet nothing.....

If this noise is the same as mine (see post earlier in year) I described it as a sandpaper rubbing noise. Particularly noticable in Command shift 3rd gear, but there most of time in all modes. Dealer's demo did not have it, but other customers did have the same noise. I understand that it is from the transfer box and the a remedy(Patch?) is due any day now.

Sounds like a mis-fitted drive belt, the poly - V belts are very easy to incorrectly install, not only on Disco 3's
