White Smoke and Restricted Performance |
|
Hey guys
Hoping to get some good avenues to keep testing the problems that we are having with a Disco 4 SDV6.
A while back I was getting a P006 error on diagnostics and replaced the MAP sensor.
Then not long after that I got the dreaded Restricted Performance error. This was quickly diagnosed to be a cracked passenger side inlet manifold which I got replaced. Then pretty soon after that I started getting white smoke (unburnt diesel) on startup and mostly when it was cold and the idle was super rough. When the engine warmed up and was going nicely she was pulling really well but then occasionally would kick back into Restricted Performance again with the same error code. This we suspected was faulty injectors, and as it has got a lot of miles on the clock I replaced all 6 injectors and at the same time did the passenger inlet manifold as I know they are prone to cracking and have had a bunch of recalls.
However the same problem is still there - white smoke, super rough idle and then when Restricted Performance kicks in she is unbelievably smooth - clear the error and back to rough and stumbling idling even.
The vehicle is currently with specialists who have since:
- Sent both turbos to be tested - no problems
- Checked all the vacuum lines - no problem
- Tested with replacement MAS sensors - no problem there
But the problem persists and I wondered if this forum might have any suggestions on avenues to look down.
Thanks in advance!

Thanks @goldypurple
I'll look at those as well - do you think that applies with the problem happening only when it is NOT in Restricted Performance?

Hi OP
What was the diagnosis in the end?
Did you managed to get it fixed?

Hi - I got the EGR's replaced and so far so good. So it was basically what I thought it was from the start and I bit the bullet and replaced them.
Hope that helps if you are having the same

Thanks for the reply OP.
I was getting Restricted Performance and it was the TSOV actuator which was stuck - so I replaced it and that got the car out of limp mode.
More recently it's doing this thing where if you suddenly do a hard acceleration (like an overtake), it throws out smelly white smoke (which I think is unburnt diesel).
It's a Discovery 4 2010. I'm not sure which path to go down, EGR's or the Injectors.
Maybe a EGR blanking test would be a good way to start?

Hmmm - sounds slightly different to mine, mine was white smoke and startup but once underway it was mostly okay and would pull pretty well. Replacing injectors didn't make a difference and it turns out my injectors were fine (anyone want 6 second hand injectors )
Yours does sound more like injectors though - but that is just my gut feeling based on my experiences - but a EGR blanking kit is a pretty cheap way to get further down the road.
Good luck,
Anthony

Take a look at the Turbo oil return. On earlier D4s the drain was too low in the sump, I.e. below the oil level. There is a modified drain pipe available to relocate above the oil level which cures the smoke issue. Search the forum, bit this link should supply enough information https://www.disco4.com/forum/topic132471.html
I had similar symptoms with my 2010 D4 that were fixed by changing that pipe.
Regards,
Steve

Hi SteveKK
Thanks for the post. So the symptoms you had - did the smoke smell quite foul? was it more like a thick smoke? On one occasion the smoke was so thick (at the point of overtaking someone) that even I couldn't see behind me. However more recently it's a lot thinner.
That said, thinking about the secondary turbo and it only kicking in after 2800rpm, it kind of correlates.
The strange thing is that is also the actuator that was stuck previously, which I replaced in order to fix the Restricted Performance issue. If this is the cause, then it has nothing to do with the EGR cooler as I originally suspected.
thanks again for your input

I cannot help with the smell as it was always behind me. Usually happened after longer spells of gentle acceleration. IMHO it is worth checking the Turbo drain. Too much pressure in the drain tube will likely cause oil to back up and then get forced past seals into the wrong areas.
I think the sump guard needs to be removed to check and parts cost was <£100 when I changed mine.
Regards,
Steve

"Take a look at the Turbo oil return. " - I'm now convinced it is this based on all the research I've done.
Need to get the parts ordered and then get this mod done. I'm very sure that it will be the cause/fix.
Thanks SteveKK for your input and everyone else.
