Wiggly Revs!

Hi Guys,

Hoping someone can help me out, I've noticed rev fluctuations at lower speeds (around 40mph) on my automatic 2.7TDV, particularly with cruise control set (so fixed rev amounts). Feels a little like car is unsure what gear to be in? anyone seen this?

I had a couple of errors fire up (HDC, Transmission, Lowering moments), fine after restart, happened three or four times in the last week or so. Purchased Autel AP200, lots of error codes across multiple systems. So went ahead and cleared them to hopefully catch the problem and pin it down, and of course it has not happened since.

Cleaned the air flow sensor, reset steering calibration (was off by -8%) and lubricated the turbo actuator (which seemed to be free beforehand). I also blanked the HDC (professional service ICU and blanking plates). Any other tips a none mechanic could try or would you guys say this is fairly normal?

Everything else seems fine (new to Disco 3 and owned for around 6 months), pull seems good in all gears. I ran diagnostics on fuel pressure which seems good both idling and with power, injector pressure (one is a little lower than the others by around 10%).

Any thoughts ideas would be really helpful, thanks you guys!

Possible failing torque converter... do a search on the forum for rev fluctuations, torque converter, etc and you should see others describing the same symptoms.

Great, thanks for this. Had a dig, I do notice a bit of a shudder on changing gear too (didn't mention, wasn't sure of the relevance and doesn't always happen). Gonna attempt the "instant shudder fix" solution from this vid:

Fingers crossed this may solve, will look into Torque Convertor if no joy! (looks considerably more scary!)

Adventure continues! (hopefully!).

I put in two tubes of shudder fix (straight into the gearbox from underneath the car) about 4k miles ago and it relieved the symptoms I was experiencing straight away. I was getting quite bad vibration through the car under light - moderate load at various speeds, generally when the revs were around 1400 - 1700.

I thought shudder fix was worth a go even if it only bought me 6 months extra, as the car has done 265k miles and already had the TC replaced once at 160k, has never had any gearbox work other than oil changes and flushes. At this mileage most places will insist on fitting a refurbished gearbox when changing the TC if the GB is original. Which makes it a £4k job. So shudderfix was a no brainer really, gives me some time for the engine to decide to blow up and make sure I haven't just wasted £4k on a new GB and TC.

If the car was younger / lower mileage / worth more, I'd probably just get the TC replaced ASAP rather than risk any damage to the gearbox by driving it for a long time with a worn out TC with shudderfix added.

Good to know. I'm on 135k miles which I guess is reasonably low for a 2009. In at around £9k (£6k purchase and around £3k servicing so far) after LandRover specialist service (2.5k for various things including prop shaft, etc.) and thorough check over, so not overly worried at this stage (results came back pretty good!).

I had a look at the cost of Torque Transfer box replace and I think honestly, I'd be selling before that!! will take me well over the £10k mark which is worrying!

Fingers crossed the Shudder Fixx (I'm guessing it's a little optimistic but we'll see!) will solve at least temporarily.

MOT in August, wish me luck and I'll post back results once I've tried it, chunky syringe, tube and two tubes of SF arriving tomorrow. Finally invested in a pack of those orange gloves too! Feels like an initiation! haha!

Just a little update on this.

Added two tubes of Shudder Fixx, improved dramatically.

Think next job will be replace trans oil / filter pan, before Torque Converter refurb/replace. The problem doesn't feel huge (mainly slight rev seeking and very occasional kick on low gears) and the Shudder Fix improved dramatically so hoping I'll buy a bit more life out of the current TC with the oil/pan/filter replace/service.

Any thoughts? do I just go all out and do the lot in one? Someone mentioned the seal(s) can perish on the TC/Gears so might be wasting time with the above without full replace.

The other thing to consider having done is a mega flush of the gearbox, not just a fluid change as this does not remove all of the old fluid.

I had the same issues as you and did this plus a couple of tubes of Dr tranny and so far so good - fingers crossed!

Mine's now on 145K and this was done 15-20k ago.

Good luck.
 Cheers,

Jez
