winches

Hi Guys

Looking at a front a-bar and winch further down the line however the warn 9.5xp seems mighty expensive for the use i will probably get out of it. Are there cheaper options that will fit the a-bar system and what are they ? or am i restricted to the warn ? not bothered about speed etc as long as it gets me out of trouble every now and again ? probably used for show more than anything but i will be using the disco off road.

Many thanks

Rob

A winch wont fit to an 'A' bar. RLD makes the brackets to fit the winches to.
You will need a minimum of a 9,500lb pull, Even though you say you wont need it much, when you do need it you will be sat in a car that weighs 2.7 tonne before its stuck, you could easily treble this figure if proper stuck. Thumbs Up

cheers chaps - just donea search and didnt realise theres a hidden option for the winches too. If i went for the hidden option but still wanted an A-frame would it be the standard one or the winch one ?

Andrew, I know very little about winching etc. but I have been looking at options as well, if it is only for occasional use when stuck, wouldn't a lower rated winch and snatch block provide sufficent pull as this would almost double the pull? Obviously it will shorten the length of the winch and will take longer, but I suspect for most people that would be an acceptable compromise. Although I don't think there is a huge difference in price between a 8000lb and 9500lb winch, not given the whole cost of the implementation. I know the group buy that Gary had sorted out was going to be about £1000 all in and that was with the Warn, but it wouldn't have gone down much if we'd opted for a cheaper winch.

True but can you guarantee you'll always be in a position to do a double pull? Confused The End

You'd need the winch version (the centre section where the a-bar covers the bumper is not present).

In my opinion...............
If you have a winch that is quoted by the manufacturer as a "9000" lb pull, please bear in mind the following...

1 that this will be for optimum conditions
2 only when the cable is on the first layer on the drum.

Also note that not all electric winches that will pull 9000lb, as described above, will hold that load. i.e. you winch up a slope & when you stop winching the load unwinds the drum and you are back where you started. Seen it happen!

When 1 pulley block in brought into play to achieve a mechanical advantage of 2:1 several things may happen.
1 the 9000lb winch will pull 18000lb
and/or
the winching speed in reduced by 50%
and / or
the current draw of the motor is reduced.
In my experience what actually happens is a complete mix of all three.

The problem I have with the 12,000lb winch is that when a pulley block is used for a MA of 2:1 i.e it might pull 24,000lb. Is the winch cradle, chassis leg etc up to that sort of load, let alone the use of 2 pulley blocks that I have also seen used!

Perhaps there is a reason that LR on fit the 9500 winch.

Regards
Nick
