I recently purchased a one year old 2005 Land Rover executive Discovery3 TDV6 HSE. After the second day of purchase I discovered that all steel components behind the dashboard had rust on them and that the driver side carpet was damp underneath. I checked the carpet under the passage and rear and could not find any other dampness. I did notice that both front driver seats had rust on the bolts that they slide on. I have taken the car back to dealer to fix however I want to make sure they fix the problem properly. What I wanted to know is there any known issues with water leaks from the windscreen or panel infront of it on Discovery 3's. If not it looks like the car might have got stuck in a river?

Probably caused by the aircon drain tubes being mis-fitted, there's a few posts about it that a search of the site sould reveal The End

There was an issue with the A pillar clips letting in water... also have them check the bond around the windscreen too... any slight hole caused by an air bubble will let water in (goes for any windscreen on any vehicle).
Good luck.
Oh and tell the dealer there are a couple of docs on LR GTR about leaks. They should be able to find them.

Thanks Slimer and Simon.
What is LR GTR? Is this the internal Land Rover dealer network reference database?

I went back to the dealer with the information you supplied. He say that at this point in time he thought the water damage was cause by stream cleaning the carpet. With regards to the rusted components behind the dashboard he was that he had looked at a few cars and they had similar rusted components behind the dashboard. If this is the case have other people noticed this?
Thanks.

Plausible but as I have never ripped my D3 apart I would not know.
One of the more adventurous members may have looked or may be interested in looking...

You do not need to rip the dash apart to view this. All you need to do is get a touch and look up the space above the brake and accelarater pedals. Most the steering and some of the other metal work has rust coating. Does any other Discovery3 owener have this?

There should be no rust at all. mine hasn't any nor would I expect it to.
Check the insulation to see if it is wet as well.
Dealer is telling porkies I suspect, shampooing the carpetwould not cause the rust, it would have to have been very damp for some time (before they sold it to you). They have sold you a vehicle with an existing fault.
I think you could ask for your money back or at least the need to rectify the problem and remove the rust replace the carpet, clean and relube the whole area.
Do you have a sunroof as this can be a cause of leaks when the drain is blocked or kinked.
Get serious with the stealer and they have sold you a vehicle that is not fit for the purpose it was supplied for.

Tony, no rust on mine there but there are small (only a trained eye would notice them) rust areas on several of the seat welds. The paint was either too thin or just a covering paint not a rust inhibiting paint.
Only other rust on the car was surface rust noted on drive shafts (axles).
But the carpet shouldn't be wet and definitely no rust in the area above the brake pedal. There must have been water on those areas at some time. Check with the dealer for sure.
BTW, for info of anyone interested, on the auto, there is a large open space for any electronic gizmos that need to be hidden from view adjacent to where the brake pedal pokes through into the dash area.

Thanks to everyone that has responded
The car does have the Alpine roof option so I suppose this could be the cause. What I really would like is to be there when they fix it to make sure they do it right however this is impossible.
In Australia we do not have a lemon law like in the US or U.K so it looks like I cannot get out of this. I just want to make sure that this does not impact the reliability of the car for the 5 year period I have High purchased it for. The dealer is Lance Dixon in Melbourne and I am not sure they knew about the problem as they only recently purchased it from Land Rover Australia. They have committed to fixing it.
I will upload the pictures I took to show you want I am talking about.
