windscreen replacement & insurance co woes |
|
Unfortunately a stone chip rapidly spread to a foot long crack on my d4, having spoken to the insurers admiral autoglass were dispatched to replace under my insurance. they turned up with a mickey mouse screen and no replacement trim or clips so I refused to have it done as it wasn't OE. Admiral are now saying that because my vehicle is over 3 years despite being covered by LR warranty ( approved used ) they wont authorise an OE screen to be fitted... anyone know where I stand? I dont want a screen put in, I want an OE spec pilkington

I should clarify. The clips and trim I'm 100% with you. As for the screen, as long as it's e-marked and has the same features and functionality, then you're not in a position to demand anything different unless your policy T&Cs clearly state otherwise.
If on the other hand you currently have heated solar reflective etc and they turn up with one that isn't to this spec then you'd have a point.

had the same, ended up with some cheap japanese copy. I asked three times to have un-branded LR Pilkington equivalent. Told every time yes not a problem.
Autoglass just fitted this random stuff. Also managed to get black spodges everywhere over the body work so god knows where that came from.
to be fair the fitter came back out and cleaned it up. James favourite hobby is writing in the third person.

Quick update, admiral have today authorised the fitting of an OE screen, despite telling me that as the car is over 3 years they wouldn't, the thing that saved me is the landrover approved warranty, I had my dealer email admiral to state that a non genuine screen would invalidate any claim arising from water damage, electronics & sensor fault or corrosion and low and behold admiral relented.
does anyone have the part number for the trim clips and trim? just to be on the safe side im going to order them just in case they turn up to fit the screen without them.

Oooh, that's a result! Well done; they usually stick to T&Cs so this one could perhaps do with being made a sticky as this question often comes up.
There is a trim repair kit consisting of all the required clips and some neoprene gaskets - DHB500400. Order one of these PER SIDE.
The trims themselves tend to stretch around the clip mounts on removal so new trims are also recommended. I'm scratching my head of the part number at the moment. Will update when I find them

Had a similar situation with my windscreen autoglass fitted non oe screen light and wiper sensor setting off lights and wiper randomly Autoglass could not sort out after 4 technicals looked at then seemed to walk away got onto insurance co. Autoglass agreed to book into lr dealer to investigate they reported unable to test as screen non oe and should be replaced then they would investigate. Upshot was oe screen fitted and hey ho no more problems to date. Painful journey but persistence eventually paid off. Commercial SDV6 8 Speed 255

As stated further up the thread the OE screen has two if not three sets of sensors ( headlights, wipers and humidity ) plus the heated element plus the thermal coating, there was no way I was going to have a non branded cheap ass copy screen put in and risk any of that lot not working AND I KNEW if there was an issue and it had to go back to a main dealer the first thing they would say is " its a non genuine screen"
Persevere with your insurance co, they pay the glass co a fixed fee per windscreen regardless of whether its a £500 corsa or a £40k top of the range motor however you are well within your rights to demand an OE screen IF the fitting of a non genuine will invalidate warranty.
if you still have no joy then ask for a contribution towards having a genuine one fitted, the cost difference is about £100 ( member Glass may clarify this ) and you'll have peace of mind.

Kin Brilliant, autoglass turned up this morning with a genuine replacement screen that was scratched to !! they had thankfully just removed the trim etc to swap them over and noticed it so stopped HOWEVER they now say a new screen is on back order for 2 weeks and to add insult to injury they replaced the old windscreen trim ( no point in fitting new trim as it will only be on a week or two guv) and the NS has just exited stage left on the motorway!

I had to get a quick replacement last summer, and AutoGlass turned up with a non-OE replacement. As I was going on a 3 week Europe trip the next day, I let them fit it with a few expletives and mis-givings.
And its been fine. No problems with sensors etc, and if anything the heating elements seem better than the original, clearing it faster and reaching further to the edges.
So I personally wouldn't be too concerned about getting another non-OE one if the need arose. 2018 1.5Ti Skoda Octavia - dull as f&ck
